Like Wilmer, I will rarely switch mouthpieces during a piece, or even a whole concert. But given the wide repertoire that we play, and the wide array of trumpets we're expected to use, and different demands various conductors will make of us, it makes good sense to have a few different mouthpieces around for different purposes. On the rotaries I like to use a JK 3B or 3C, sometimes a Bresalmair G1 depending on sound, volume, etc. On C, D, and Eb piston trumpets I use the following: Laskey 80MD, 80B, 80C, Schilke M1, or a Schilke custom 1 rim, B underpart. And some weeks, or even certain days, one just works better than the others! Be prepared for anything, and with the mouthpieces available today, you have a lot of possibilities.

I play pretty much the same mouthpiece from the beginning to the end of pieces. I change for the higher horns and flugel, and that's it.
Lew Soloff carries an amazing array of mouthpieces. Do you?
Wilmer
I'm still finding my way around this board so please bear with this old -timer.
During the 34th Annual University of Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar on Nov 6,2004,
Lew was seen reaching in his right lower coat pocket for a mouthpiece.
He did this often and although I cannot attest to how many pieces he had in his coat pocket,I can say with certainty he had E Pluribus Unum.

trumpettrax is an unknown quantity at this point
I started with a Bach 7C, someone gave me a 5c so I played on that then started taking lessons with the best TEACHER in town (IMO) and he listened to my sound and had me try a few mp's. Then told me to purchase a Bach 3 which I think he said Bach 3 and 3b are the same thing.

First, I am a 40 y/o comeback player. I'm probably and Intermediate player at best (for now!). When do I need to think about changing mp's if I need to change at all?

The reason I ask this is because I'm noticing that while playing air is "leaking" from the corners of my mouth. Is there somthing I should be doing differently or is a new "bigger" mp in order etc.

Thanks for the input!

I usually just use one on my Bb, used to be a Schilke 14A4C but when I switched to Yamaha I liked the piece that came with it, the Yamaha 13A4A. Sometimes if I'm playing second in a brass quintet or a really low part I'll use a Bach 3C or even a 1 1/2C, the Yamaha isn't great below about Bb below the staff. Sometimes I'll practice some things with the bigger mouthpieces just because it's more tiring, like swinging a heavy bat. But on a gig it's almost always the Yamaha. I have a Warburton lying around somewhere that I liked.
