Nixon in China

Talking about WSS made me think about the shows I have played. No one picked up where Lenny left off.
There are some operas that swing.
Check out John Adams' "Nixon in China." There is a bit of Lenny in there to my ear. "The Chairman Dances" section is fun to play. We did this opera in Brooklyn with Spano conducting. He was perfect. Watch this guy, he's a keeper

Same here.
I go way back with John Adams. We met at Marlboro in 1970. He writes nice trumpet parts.We premiered "The Death of Klinghoffer" in Brooklyn. powerful stuff.
Robert is a trumpet player's conductor. His upbeats relate to his downbeats. You can trust that he will give you that cue you discussed at the rehearsals

Yes. Adams wrote an opera about the murder of Klinghoffer.

Thanks, Wilmer, I had no idea! I'm amazed we haven't had it played out here as there's a big connection to his music as of the deWaart era. We played just about everything the guy wrote with edo. Most recently I played the Anfortas Wound. What a piece, holy smokes. Very sad tune but very good. I think my favorite is Harmonielehre, the one with chorus. It's a blow but very satisfying. He's about the only one of the latter day minimalists that I enjoy playing. Can you imagine what a trumpet concerto by that guy would be like?

Spano is excellent. He is from Elkhart, Indiana. His dad was a woodwind assembler and tester for a few of the companies based there. Dad designed and was selling clarinet and sax mouthpieces for a while that were supposedly pretty darned good. His mother was a pianist who taught lots of local students and had a job acompanying choral groups at one of the local high schools. Bob was pretty young when I lived in Elkhart in the early '80s, but his folks were delightful musical people.

Harmonielehre is one of the best orchestral blows for a trumpet player, IMO. It has a bit of everything, so big loud stuff, some fast rhythmic stuff and the gorgeous soft high solo in the second movement, the Anfortas Wound.

There is also and amazing movie version of The Death of Klinghoffer with John Adams conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. Very powerful film. Also check out "On the Transmigration of Souls."
