It's amazing how little is said about his 1960's band "The Jazztet" that featured Art Farmer and a West Philadelphian (McCoy) on piano and/or his "Funky Quintet" with Nat Adderley.
The locals here in Pittsburgh,Pa are now getting around to appreciate and present music by my man John Haley Sims a/k/a Zoot Sims.



Has anyone read the new Lee Morgan bio? I can't wait to see how many things are screwed up None of my Philly friends were talked to........oh well......

After your initial post on the book,I ordered it from my local bookstore and didn't receive a call from them neither did I follow up with them to determine
if it had arrived.
Since none of your Philly friends including Reggie Workman were contacted,and Jackie McLean and Billy Higgins are now deceased,I wonder who are his pre-1963 sources ?
Between Dec 1963 and June 1966,the man was too busy recording and enriching lives including the life of yours truly.
Can't wait to get my hands on that book.
Lex Humphries, the drummer with the Jazztet, went to Mastbaum with Henry Grimes and Ted Curson. Art's twin brother, Addison, was the bass player.

I knew about Owen Marshall and Joe Webb but very little about Tommy Monroe.
I also heard a lot about Big Maybelle in Mr.Webb's band.
Didn't Jimmy Heath and John Glenn had working bands during that period ?

One of the beautiful things about Mr.Morgan was his eagerness to learn and converse.

Never saw Lex in action neither was I aware he was a Mastbaum grad.
Reference twin brothers - which music school did Henry's brother Leon attended ?

Who from the neighborhood attended Ornstein or Landis school ?

Wilmer,do you remember the "Clock Bar" below the Time & Life Building (subway level) on 50th Street & 6th Avenue ?
I loved my assignment in that area circa 1973,especially when Sam Ash was selling those Japanese woodwind instruments as far as Gino's in Philly was selling his cheesesteaks.
It was a haven for Boppers who had move up from the Village to Broadway.
