Re: Once in a lifetime

I've had a couple here and there too. Once, about a year before I came there for college, Maynard came through town and played at my college with the auditorium only seating about 400-it was packed, and i sat front and center, as he was one of my biggest influences. Concert of a lifetime. I also had the distinct pleasure of meeting and conversing with Wayne Bergeron about an hour before one of his concerts in Lawton, OK. Nicest guy in the world. I'd love to be able to take lessons from him. There's quite a few more, but those are my 'once in a lifetimes'.

Re: Once in a lifetime

In 1963 I played the Haydn Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ormandy was supposed to conduct, but he had a near fatal car accident earlier that season and William Smith conducted my debut with the Philly.
The performance was like a dream.....there was a kid from South Philly playing with his heroes. In one of the tutti sections in the last movement, I was listening to the wonderful sounds of the orchestra, when I heard someone quietly singing the trumpet part...............Oops I forgot why I was there. Those few notes were all I missed that night.
That was once in a lifetime experience.

Wise One - Your experience would have been when Seymour Rosenfeld was 2nd chair with Philly. He was a popular trpt instructor (at Temple) if you could afford to go (sorry grew up in the 'burbs in Montg. Cty). And Gilbert Johnson was 1st chair - they were great on that Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli album with Philadelphia, Chicago & Cleveland Brass Ensembles. Wore that album out too! (p.s. best fireworks in Philly in those days were at Olney HS!!!). Best Regards

Carmell is a gem that not many know about, but have probably heard once or twice.
What a fantastic hard bop player.

My friend Brek, let me admit to personal prejudice here.
I arrived on the scene in 1963,and have never witnessed a sub-par trumpeter in either
Mr.Silver or Mr.Blakey's band.
Today, there are many gifted trumpet players out there and unfortunately many who labor in Jazz would never become a house hold name since they are not on VIDEO and most of today's youths are two damn lazy to sit still for 30+ minutes and listen to the beautiful sounds of the HORN.
As I write this response,I'm playing and listening to the Piero Odorici Quintet (plays Kurt Weill) where Piero and Eddie Henderson are serving 'secondi piatti' (main courses) with
'una caraffa di vino bianco della casa' (a carafe of house white).

Live well and don't let the bastards get you down.

I studied with three of the four trumpet players in the Philadelphia Orchestra who were playing the concert, Sigmund Hering, Gil Johnson and Sam Krauss. They were very happy that night.

I am 24 years old, and I agree 100% with this statement. That being said, one of the reasons I don't mind my 1 hour long morning commute is because it is my listening time. I get 1 hour in the morning and one at night to really listen to music. I love long drives because it gives me time to listen.
