The Philly/Detroit 2008 Summit

The 29th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival (Aug 29 - Sept 1,2008) .

Jazz Fest 2008 will celebrate the rich musical traditions of Philadelphia and Detroit and the “Trane” that connects them. Billed as A Love Supreme: the Philly/Detroit Summit, the festival will feature Philadelphia native and renowned bassist Christian McBride as artist in residence.

Other featured artists include vocalist Dianne Reeves, Hank Jones, Gerald Wilson, and Philadelphia stalwarts Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and Pat Martino. The festival will also boast headliners Roy Hargrove, James Carter, Ravi Coltrane, Jim Hall, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, and many more.

In addition, there will be a special tribute to Alice Coltrane, led by her son Ravi, and featuring Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, and Detroit’s own Geri Allen. Jimmy Heath will perform with the Heath Brothers and make a guest appearance with the Wayne State University Big Band. Benny Golson will perform with the Temple University Big Band, under the direction of Terell Stafford, who will also play with his quartet.

The festival will also continue its “Come Monday” gospel programming, the Here & Now Stage for emerging artists, showcases for outstanding college and high school ensembles, a pre-festival club series, the KidBop area, and the increasingly popular Jazz Talk Tent.

And to top it all off, Detroit Jazz Fest will continue to provide the many special features that make it the hippest event around.

Stay tuned!

Oh yeah, the "Mash Potato started a long time ago."

Can't believe Chubby Checker is not in the line up to have the visitors twist the night away.

Music is indeed the food of love.

Ernest "Chubby Checker" Evans, worked in the store on Point Breeze that sold live chickens. This was in the days before Frank Purdue. Chubby was a plucker...............don't ask
DeDe was married to Kenny Gamble, metal detectors are in order
I recorded with both Chubby and DeDe before I left Philly.
Ah, the good old days

Wilmer - I have a question that will seem totally random but sort of on topic: who played horn on the Delfonic's "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" record?

I've loved that tune ever since I watched Jackie Brown

I pushed away to retrieve my Arista recording of The Delfonics and found that Mr.Thom Bell didn't list any of the musicians.
However, since Mr.Bell was also associated with THE STYLISTICS,my liner cover of ROUND 2
lists the trumpters as Rocco Bene and Bobby Hartzell.

Please await confirmation from the Wise One.

Russell Thompkins is one mighty fine singer.
During the early '70s his voice was heard on every street corner and basement party in NYC.
'Children of the Night' replaced 'Stay In my Corner ' by The Dells when it came to slow and close, very close dancing.

Those were the days when Gil Scott Heron exposed our spending habits by announcing to the Ladies that a bottle of wine (Ripple) cost $1.09
