Re: Range needed to be a pro?

Pro Essentials. I work pretty extensively as a free lance artist in my area. I am not a "lead" player. That being said, i have never found myself in a situation where I could not cover a particular part. I have a C to C range. Yes, I can player higher, but I would never feel comfortable playing let's say lead on a three hour big band gig. However, I am comfortable doing show work. You should have good technique, and an even timbre' from C to C You should have a beautiful sound and good reading ability with a knowledge of different styles is essential. Play everything you can. Play orchestral excerpts, big band gigs, combo gigs, learn to take a solo and not be "sad". Get as much experience as possible and be able to read!!!!

You don't understand. If you're a halftone away, why would it be "physically impossible" ?

My question was more, since when we press the pistons we lower our "true pitch" a halftone down, what prevents someone who reaches a high F# to hit the next halftone by not pressing the darn piston? :)
Brem,
High G is an octave above the staff.
You are absolutely right in your thought train though. If one does not use force against the lips to press out the high F#, the high G will always come out as it is on the same partial - eventually with a thinner sound. Ab to double C should also come out, but all partials are not created equal!

Re: Range needed to be a pro?

As Wilmer said "Flexibility of style" has to be one of the most important issues.

In the UK we have a player called Derek Watkins who has done big band, Bond film scores, Harry Potter and all sorts of other things across many different styles and i think the ability to do that has helped him earn a consistent living.

Its got to make a difference if you are able to play comfortably in a wide range of settings.

I saw Derek play with the BBC Big Band in Glasgow, he was absolutely fantastic. Whereabouts in Scotland do you stay Gordon?
