Michael McLaughlin[/QUOTE Jimmy Owens and Lew Soloff played in the Symphony of the New World.
I became the principal trumpet when I moved to NYC in 1970.

A concert was given at Carnegie Hall with an orchestra that was completely integrated.
Joe Wilder, Dr. Leonard Goines, your dad and I were the trumpet section of the orchestra.
We played Petroushka on that concert.........I played the final muted section on the D trumpet.
Jonsey was a super trumpet player.

Thank you so much for that bit of history. Me & my brother were there! My dad died Nov. 4, 2004. He was an incredible trumpet player. He was suppose to play on my debut CD, but he died just before that. i wrote a song in tribute to him ("Tribute to Bo"), and as soon as I can find a trumpet player to help me with that, I'll be recording it (I already have the music done). Hearing these stories really make me misty, as I miss him a lot!

Whatever stories that are available about my dad or my grandfather, I want to hear them. Trust me when I say that I'm probably familiar with most of them anyway since I went everywhere with him. My grandfather used to go to the Union Hall in Manhattan all the time, and I'd go with him some times. Thanks again for the anectdotes. I hope I hear many more. God bless you all!

Hey Wilmer, here are a few pics for you. Maybe you can recognize my dad, Reunald Jr., and the album my grandfather ("Jonesy") did with Quincy!

Re: Reunald Jones

One of the interesting thing I have read about Reaunald Jones was that he was part of the older group of musicians in Basie's band of the fifties. Guys like Marshall Royal, Freddie Greene (obviously), Bobby Plater, and Jones were not products of the forties or fifties, but had had some big band experience in the thirties, which meant that their musical origins were pre bop. I also think this is one of the secrets of the sound of the "New Testament" Basie Band, the steadying influence of these veteran musicians.
