Things that keep the Assistant/Associate up nights

Prokofiev- Scythian Suite-Eb Trumpet

Strauss- Ein Heldenleben and almost every Strauss opera. Salome and others.

Britten-Peter Grimes

That's a start on sleepless nights for the poor guy down there at the end of the section sleeping like a baby

Got any other Asst./Assc. gems?

Wilmer

Re: Things that keep the Assistant/Associate up nights

A lot of the Shostakovich Symphonies are scored with the 3rd part higher then the second and at times doubling 1st with the second doing the octave thing.

I'd say the Sea Interludes are at the top of the list. Is it Bruckner 8 with the big 3rd trumpet solo?

I have nightmares about anything that has sharps and flats,
and anything that is faster than quarter notes.
Of course, I'm only 50 years old, so by the time I'm 80 I might be ready for eighth notes.
Gotta run now, because I'm spending the day wood-shedding "Happy Birthday"...

If you're playing the 1911 Petrouchka....

We're talking mostly about 3rd trumpet parts, though. The things that keep me up at night are the crazy 1st parts that get handed down to me. I've got nobody to pass them along to if I don't want to play them

Re: Things that keep the Assistant/Associate up nights

How about Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet? The principal grabs the fun cornet part, leaving the opening ff high c# and those nasty high c to e 16th slurs in the capable (Bb holding because "we'll be better in tune that way") hands of the third/Asst./Ass. Peter Grimes is by far the scariest though.

Or how about the call, one hour before the concert, from the Personnel Manager telling you that the Principal player has a hangnail and won't be able to play tonight's concert......the one you didn't get to rehearse
It has happened to me.........quite a few times.
