Re: Try this

I often imagine what Charlie Shavers could have done with a piccolo trumpet.
He was amazing.

Re: Try this

Shavers has a place in most jazz histories but not a big one. He is almost a footnote and, since I am not THAT old, I know little about him other than he was a buddy of Diz and according to the histories he was a "bridge" to bebop. For a footnote, he plays very well. Does anybody know much about him?

Re: Try this

Charlie's range and technical ability was incredible. He did not even back down to Roy. Roy was the king of cutting contests, but not when Shavers was around Late in life Charlie did an album with strings. He was a versatile player.

That is one of the most "live" videos I've ever seen. I mean that you can feel the energy right through the screen.

I envy those of you that can do that kind of stuff. It's really exciting to experience.

Re: Try this

Charlie Shavers was a true jazz great and when Wilmer says he didn't back down even to Roy, that's saying a lot, because Roy was the resident lion. John McNeil sees Shavers as a progenitor of Fats Navarro and Clifford, whereas Diz came from Roy. I tend to agree. Another collosal trumpeter who tends to get overlooked: Hot Lips Page. He wouldn't back down to either Roy or Shavers! To hear Charlie at his best, check the various incarnations of the John Kirby Sextet, Charlie with Norris Turney, O'Neill Spencer, Billy Kyle and Ruseell Procope. What a band!

o.o

Oh man! That was cool! I loved the ending

I love the feeling when you just get together with a few trumpet friends and just jam. Most of the time it ends up being really fun, and we always have some laughs!
