Wilmer,

It looks like those two didn't care much for each other.

From the video, it appears Bernstein is conducting WAY out in front of the beat - it would have been impossible for Carreras to get it right if he were relying on that beat.

Wilmer,

You can't imagine how educational something like this is for a player like me that will never be in that setting.

Re: West Side Story Links

I know it's been a week or so since anything was posted on this thread... but I had a couple of questions for you, Wilmer.

First...I haven't been able to view the videos...will try tonight. Something goofy with some java settings or the macromedia player right now. Can't wait, though...

Anyway... to my questions. I seem to have the good fortune of playing WSS about every few years in one form or another. Touring thru..or local production..you know. Anyway..it's another cycle and I've got the book to start in a few weeks. Because I've done this show so many times, I've played every (tpt) part at one time or another. Looking over the 1st book again this time, it struck me (especially reminiscently looking over the Rumble and Taunting scene)....what in the heck did you guys think of the first time you saw this book? Did it seem like some of this was so unlike anything you'd seen before? I mean, stylistically and musically...

This is really quite a show. I don't think - even after so many times - that I haven't been just in awe of it. I can't wait to play it again.

When it comes to music,LENNY has always been a hard task master.
Say what you want,he got the best out of Jose.

Had Charles Mingus stood in for Lenny, the Emergency Medical Team (EMT) would have had to painstakingly remove Mr.Mingus' bass from Jose's head and neck.
Charles "Don't call me Charlie" Mingus damn sure took his music seriously !
Here's a question for you jazz improvisors...when lost in a solo, who in the rhythm section do you turn to for help in bailing you out - the bassist or the drummer ?
I've omitted pianist as the drummer is their savior !

The second player, Phil Ruecktenwald, absolutely nails that low stuttering lick. The "Taunting Scene" is really challenging for all the section. I grew up listening to the Broadway cast album, so it wasn't too much of a shock the first time I played the show. I was fortunate to play lots of contemporary music all my years at the trumpet.

Re: West Side Story Links

I finally received my copy of the DVD last night and had to watch it before going to band rehearsal. Holy Moly! What a superb job by everyone involved. It's hard to think that Leonard and John had such a close relationship when Bernstein burns his butt over "giving elocution lessons over the mic!"

Wilmer, thank you for that great art (along with the rest of the folk involved).

Everyone else... if you haven't got a copy or haven't seen it.... GET ONE! The first half it seems like Wilmer must have paid the cameraman off because he's featured "front and centre" a lot. I thought I was watching the "Wilmer and Lenny Show" for a while.
