![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ted Curson, Bobbie Timmons, Henry and Leon Grimes, Tootie Heath, wiseone2, and would you believe Sherman Hemsley were all students at Barrett Junior High School at the same time. The first gig I played was with Sam Reed and his Be-Boppers. Sam was the sax player/organizer of the kids. We had rehearsals at my house sometimes or Tootie's house. These were some seriously baaaaaad kids Ted is in Finland for the summer. He has been involved with the Pori Festival for the last forty years or more years. John Lamb plays bass in Leon Merian's band in Florida. John was the bass player with Duke the last time I had the pleasure to work with the Maestro. Wilmer

![]() | [quote="wiseone2"]You are thinking about Dell'Osa and Son. They were THE mouthpiece/repair guys in Philadelphia. Tony played on their mouthpieces......heck everyone did. Tony Marchione was Lee's real teacher. [u]The guy at Mastbaum, Hy Wynne, was not a very nice guy. Everything I knew about "the players" and movers and shakers of Philadelphia,Pa during the early 60 was told to me by Messrs.Morgan & Timmons. Both left their mark in the world of jazz and are surely missed! One of these days I will tell you about the 50s in Philly. We survived, with a lot of help. Can't wait for those days to come. I fell in love with jazz during the period when the music had a negative connotation because of the personnel making the music and later learned why guys like Giacinto Figlia and Joseph Filipelli changed their names to George Wallington and Flip Phillips, respectively. Hell, when my Pittsburgh area neighbor became head football coach at the Univ of Pitt during the 80's,I met a man (Bob Grier,an OHIO native) who in Jan 1956 almost made the Governor of Georgia cancel the SUGAR BOWL between PITT and Georgia Tech because of the color of his skin.

I'm sure the Principal couldn't wait for that class to graduate Sherman Hemsley a/k/a Mr.Jefferson and former Postal Employee. Wilmer, this explains why you never received your packages from Selmar prior to your departure for B/More in 1966 By the way,did Bobby ever share his spending loot from the income he earned from playing in those Funeral Homes during his youthful days? Additionally,I recently received word from a friend that Jimmy Heath is approaching his 80th Birthday in October and will be palying at Sea on Dec 3-10 aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line (Sun) out of New Orleans.

![]() | I thought George ran a Dry Cleaners chain. He did and if you pardon the pun,Louise took him to the cleaners. Oh,Tom & Helen Willis are growing old gracefully. While on a car trip,an old couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. The old woman left her glasses on the table but didn't miss them until they were back on the highway. The old man fussed and cussed and complained as he drove all the way back to the resturant. When they finally arrived, and the old woman got out of the car to retrieve her glasses,he said,"While you're in there, you may as well get my hat, too."
