Who are today' hot composers?

I like Thomas Ades. His opera "Powder Her Face" is a very fine work. John Adams has been a favorite composer of mine, I love his trumpet writing.
Who do you like?

Re: Who are today' hot composers?

Joseph Schwantner plays with some very cool textures, and I also like
Jan Sandström's works.

Re: Who are today' hot composers?

I really like Tan Dun's work, especially his Water Concerto. Christopher Rouse wrote a great flute concerto, but I haven't heard anything really great since.

I assume composers are extended to those in the field of Jazz.
If correct,I have to include a VIOLET (NYU grad [Wayne Shorter] ) who
as I write remains as HOT as any young turk.

Re: Who are today' hot composers?

A few years ago the adult community wind ensemble I was playing in read through Eric Whitacre’s Ghost Train; quite the fun, jazzy little piece. He also writes gorgeous choral works. I think you can still find a CD of them, sung by a college choir, on Amazon.com. He’s also written an electronic opera (Paradise Lost?), and some other wind ensemble stuff like Godzilla Eats Los Angeles.

His music is very programmatic – reminds me of the Metropolis Symphony by Michael Daugherty. The imagery jumps right off the page at you.

Re: Who are today' hot composers?

I totally agree. Eric Whitacre has some amazing pieces. I played his piece October in middle school, and even to this day it is my favorite concert band piece. I was really amazed at how he could write something so simple that sounded so adavnced and was exceptionaly beautiful.

Re: Who are today' hot composers?

Sorry for the late post!

David Sampson (classical composer) has a great album of his own works out called "Monument," on Summit Records. Seriously good contemporary music. He has also published some excellent compositions for solo trumpet, among other things.

Amazon.com: Monument: The Music of David Sampson: Music: David Sampson,Alan Balter,Orchestr Ceská Filharmonie,Raymond Mase

Also, he's a former student of Gil Johnson!

Re: Who are today' hot composers?

Steve Rouse is becoming one of my favorites... check out the Avatar on Ray Mase's trumpet in our time CD or on the Lumen CD by Mike Tunnell (it was written for him and his wife.) great piece of music.
