I believe I read that answer had something to do with the "invention" of recording (abeit rather primitive) and the need for the soloist to be heard. A trumpet projected much better than a cornet; even the cornet with the C-cup mouthpiece which the trumpet effectively replaced at the time.

I'm sure someone can chime in and provide the right reference however.

Probably to match with the other players.

Pop's NY Times onituary sez:

Moving back to Chicago in 1925, Mr. Armstrong again played at the Dreamland Cafe, where his wife, Lil, had her own band, and with Erskine Tate's "symphonic jazz" orchestra at the Vendome Theater. It was at that point that he gave up the cornet for the trumpet.
