Why not rotaries!?

Hi there!

I was just curious as to why we have mostly adopted a valve system instead of using rotaries? Don't they move faster and have less problems with them? (sticking, casing problems, etc) I've heard that they have a different sound (European orchestra), but, is it really that distinct? Do the pros weight out the cons on rotary trumpets. I have never played one or even seen one in person so I can not comment on that. I am looking forward to the wisdom of people's answers. Thanks!

Hello Lo,

It's not just a matter of perinet or rotary valves. The whole construction and sound concept is different. There is a very good article on this on the Thein brass website, unfortunately it's in German
