Wilmer, Talk about "shakes & rips"

Wilmer,
The TM member rowuk mentioned that you commented on the technique of "shakes & rips," but I don't know how to find that comment. Do you mind going over that again?

I don't use the finger hook, so the shake is simple for me.
I use the so-called hand vibrato, it is really more of a finger vibrato. This is how I play shakes. My thumb is supporting the leadpipe. My fingers form the letter C. I have a very, very light grip on the horn. Gently wave. You will have to find the fingertip pressure that gets the shake going for you. It takes very little movement to get the trill started. Playing a shake is like waving goodbye

Re: Wilmer, Talk about "shakes & rips"

Thanks Wilmer I'll try your method for the shake. Can you tell me what interval it's usually done in, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, or what?

Re: Wilmer, Talk about "shakes & rips"

When I think of shakes, I think the Basie band. Shakes are usually whole steps. Fifth line F is a good starting point. Play a sustained mezzo-forte F, then ever so slowly start to gently wave that okay sign. The shake/trill should come easily. Remember.......keep a light grip on the horn and move the wrist.
I hope that's clear.
Listen the lots of Basie, Snookie and Jonesy wrote the book on shakes.

Listen the lots of Basie, Snookie and Jonesy wrote the book on shakes.

Snookie is still on tour.
Nancy Wilson recently showed up in the 'Burgh with the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra and there saw Snookie, tooting his horn.

Jonesy was a MONSTER !
