I use the so-called hand vibrato, it is really more of a finger vibrato. This is how I play shakes. My thumb is supporting the leadpipe. My fingers form the letter C. I have a very, very light grip on the horn. Gently wave. You will have to find the fingertip pressure that gets the shake going for you. It takes very little movement to get the trill started. Playing a shake is like waving goodbye Wilmer | |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Wilmer, Talk about "shakes & rips" When I think of shakes, I think the Basie band. Shakes are usually whole steps. Fifth line F is a good starting point. Play a sustained mezzo-forte F, then ever so slowly start to gently wave that okay sign. The shake/trill should come easily. Remember.......keep a light grip on the horn and move the wrist. I hope that's clear. Listen the lots of Basie, Snookie and Jonesy wrote the book on shakes. Wilmer |
