Thank you very much for your nice words about my playing, I must say that in Costa Rica since seventies we (as a nation) started in the music, as a result the level of musicians have grown significantly and we have very good brass players, I´d like to thank my teachers, Jorge Duarte (He studied at Cincinnati CM with Eugene Blee) and Ricardo Vargas (studied with Cichowicz at NW). There are other trumpet players that are doing great carrears in the USA, like Jose Sibaja (with Boston Brass) Oscar Garcia (New World Sym.) Edgar Campos (freelancing in Chicago Area). Sorry this is getting too long,

Regarding the Ellsworth Smith Competition, it was a terrific experience, I sent the tape on recomemdation of my teacher at Loyola University in New Orleans during may 2004, I thought I had nothing to loose!! When I got the notification thAT I advanced to the Semifinals it was a shock at first but then I thought that it was an honor just to get in that position. After that I practiced like few times I have done in my live (the whole day). One of the things that helped me to not to get nervess it was that I was happy with just been there, so I just went there to make music and not to really to do the competition.

Regarding the Exposed Throat, it is one of the most difficult pieces I've ever played, in all aspects, rythmn, multifonics, wide intervals, open valves, etc. at the beggining it took me a week just to go over the first page!!, the first day I could'nt even finish the first and second staff. Luckly it got faster as I was working on it, then I tried to get the music out of all those notes, I tried to cause effects in the audience, so I exagerated everything it was in the music. I am looking the music right now and if I want to play it again I would have to start all this process again, I hope it comes back quicker next time!!

The trumpeters in the final group are all serious players and Ellsworth must have been a fabulous experience for you. Congratulations!

Exposed Throat, as you probably know, was the result of a commission that John Wallace and I hatched at Lake Placid for the ITG. It was composed during the same period as Gruber's trumpet concerto ARIEL and almost found its way into the concerto as a cadenza (imagine...). It's fabulously successful, don't you think? Audiences go mad for it with all of the foot stomping and multi phonics.

I'm sure that it will come back for you quickly. Most things learned meticulously over time do.

Exposed Throat appears in collection published by Boosey called "Go Blow Your Own", which contains pieces by Max Davies, Robin Holloway, Ned Rorem and others. It's worth picking up.

I will soon have recordings of 3 of my students, Lisa Edelman (CalArts), Aaron Smith (CalArts), and Philippe Brunet (McGill) playing Exposed Throat. We sent Lisa over to Glasgow and London a few years ago to play it for Gruber and she also did ET as a pre-concert event for the London Sinfonietta. Tristram Williams gave the best live performance I've ever heard at Chosen Vale last summer. It was truly astonishing and I have an archival recording of that as well. PM me if you're interested.
