Alois Haba

Ed,

Do you have any experience with 1/4 tone trumpets as designed for the music of Alois Haba?

David,

Micro-tonal scales are an acquired taste and I find them to be very interesting indeed.

Marcinkiewicz makes a quarter tone trumpet which is far superior to thr old Holton design that Don Ellis played. I prefer the .25 tone flugelhorn, however. The overtones produced by the larger horn keep a descending scale from sounding like a total wipe-out.

I had my Couesnon 4 valve flugelhorn modified last year at the suggestion of Markus Stockhausen, who has the same. The 4th valve lowers everything by a .25 tone. VERY cool and an improviser's dream. If only language were so easy. . .

Best,
EC

Fascinating!

Thanks much for the info.

Are there many recordings of .25 tone pieces?

David,

Markus has many recordings of his improvisations on his .25 tone flugelhorn. You can find them on his website.

As for "quater tone pieces" there are many that have quarter tones in them (Scelsi's QUATTRO PEZZI, Friedman's SOLUS, and many others come to mind), but I wouldn't call them quarter tone pieces. Perhaps Erickson's KRYL, but the trick there is to be able to sing precise pitches in falsetto, not the quarter tones. It is loaded micro-tonally, however, and very entertaining.

Cheers,
EC (back in the saddle again) (cue: off-stage clip clops)
