Awesome observation, and appropriate for almost every piece! Most really good conductors will allow the the trumpets at least one "Bugler's Holiday" moment per concert, and in the 3rd Suite, that usually happens in the fast part of the 1st movement-- "tu-ah tu-ah tu-ah TEE!" Always good for a violist jump!

I always thought that LeRoy stole the Buglers Holiday intro from the first movement of the Christmas Oratorio, transposed it into Bb and removed the unnecessary embellishments that Bach had originally written in (the flutes and tympani for instance).

Do we want to take bets that the 3rd Suite, in the fast part of the 1st movement-- "tu-ah tu-ah tu-ah TEE!" has very often been:
"tu-ah tu-ah tu-ah §$%&/xxx!" that causes the 1st trumpet player to hide behind the stand instead of the violist to jump?

Re: Bach Stylistic Questions

Ed, I had heard from teachers that the third part was "principale" because he was the older player, and while his chops may have gone a bit, he was taken to be the wise one (no pun intended) in terms of style. This really inverts (pun intended) our contemporary logic! Do you know anything of this historically?

BTW, I was browsing around one of a couple "controlled-access" classical music archives via a library link (either "Classical Music Library" or the Naxos archive site, I can't remember which) and came upon a recording you made, I think with Burns, et. all, of some Vejanovsky. That stuff's a trip! Trumpet players who can write music. What can they think of next?
