kadleck has a spectacular aura about
I haven't played the B-burg since college (yes, it was a LONG time ago), but I had what I considered to be the perfect horn: a Yamaha long bell piccolo in C. (All the high A's obviously became high G's, and it puts the 3rd movement in the key of F.) I sold it years ago and wish I hadn't. I wasn't a great axe, but it worked great for that piece.

At a lesson with Uan Rasey he saw my Picc. in the quad case I brought to my lesson..."Have you played Brandenburg on it?" He then played the last movment for me....on his Bflat...very light, flute like..I've heard Allen Vizzutti do much the same thing....

Guys,

I've purposefully stayed out of this discussion for the reasons illustrated above. Trumpet and mouthpiece choice are very personal issues and best solved by experimentation, not by following another player's advice.

I played the Brandenburg over a hundred times back in the 70s and 80s on a Schilke P54 and a very small mouthpiece that Ren Schilke made for me. Others thought that the mouthpiece was the secret to my success and when they tried it but bottomed out after 3 or 4 notes.

Cassone plays a rather deep replica of a Baroque (cup with a hole drilled in it -- no throat) mouthpiece on his nat and sounds like a flute.

Everyone should find his/her own way.

Cheers from sunny and HOT SoCal,
EC

I'm finding I can greatly color my sound with the 3C even though the Stork 7P makes the notes pop a bit more. I'm trying to make those high phrases sound like a flute (ie easy). The notes are there but so is the intensity. eek... much work to be done.

Thanks again for all the comments.
Best,

T

Ed, Sorry to drag you back into this topic... just a quick question. Do you like the Brandenburg being done on the NAT? Would you say Cassone's performance is close to what we think it might have been like in those days? "Sounds like a flute"... when I first read that it sounded like disapproval? Not certain. I apologize... Don't mean to put you on the spot... but if you don't mind I would like some clarification of your likes and dislikes on Cassone's performance. Silence would be an acceptable reply... Thanks.

PS... the 2 baroque pieces I own (Egger and Naumann) are basically that... a cup with a hole drilled into it...

Cheers from a VERY HOT Phoenix, AZ... wanna trade?

Rog,

I love performances of Baroque music on the nat and, in fact, since the moment I moved to Europe in 1986 I haven't heard a single one in a major concert venue (or on a serious label) played on the piccolo.

Since I wasn't around "back in the day" (my kids would argue) I can't say with certainty what Herr Reiche and others actually sounded like, but the bloom of overtones present in the longer "natural" instrument compliment the other soloists so beautifully that this is what I hope Bach's trumpeter sounded like.

Gabri is incredible. He buzzes with core/resonance to double C on his mouthpiece and plays with flute-like effortlessness in the clarino register. As do many others, I might add.

The nat was required of all trumpet majors at the Royal Academy of Music when I was teaching in London (and probably still is today). The level of achievement after 2 years of study was remarkable and the best of them played as effortlessly as (name your icon). If you're serious about Baroque music, learn the nat.

Best,
EC

Hi Trent. I have the very horn for you!!!! My custom picc was especialy built for playing number 2 on by Mark Bennet, one of the finest piccolo specialists from the UK.

It is a long model, straight picc with a chopped down Schertzer rotary valve section and a pure copper seamless bell made by Wedgewood with a spring loaded bell tuning slide. The lead pipe is from a Getzen. The instrument has had some egonomic and cosmetic alterations made by Leigh and is beautifully finished in the signature 1st Class brass scratched and polished 24 carrat gold.

It is a real showmans trumpet - looks incredible and sounds as sweet as sugar. It is way to good for most of the work I do on picc in studios and as a treble in shows. This instrument belongs on stage.

I could arrange a loan, although this instrument will be up for sale just as soon as Leigh can complete my order for a new Eclipse picc! ;)

I guess that the component parts and construction costs of this instrument add up to in excess of £4000 - it is a beauty!

Congrats on your new dealership by the way. I hope the production line will be able to cope with the huge demand that I'm sure you will be creating.

All the best. Noel.
