![]() | Re: Concerto Options Ed, Thanks for the welcome, and for the words of encouragement... Of course, I don't think that my audience will be unsupportive, only my brain!!! I guess preventing that sort of thing is why we practice so much. One more addition to the concerto list, by the way. Jim Stephensnon (see my earlier post) is currently completing a new concerto for the same forces as the Shostakovich First Piano Concerto. The work is being written for Marc Reese (Empire Brass) and his wife Lisa Leonard (not Empire Brass). Jim is a fellow-trumpeter who understands our issues very well. He's written several trumpet pieces (including a terrific sonata with piano) and can easily be searced on the Internet for those who might be interested. ~Jeff |

| New Friend | Re: Concerto Options Hi folks, another new guy here. I could not resist to comment on my good old time friend Jeff Work. I was at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge for Jeff's premiere of ewazen's Concerto! Man, what a blast!! Jeff played the living s...out of it and Ewazen, who was there for the performance could not have been more pleased. Jeff inspired me to play the South American premiere of it here in Brasil! I have also heard a tape of Jeff playing the premiere of Jim Stephenson's Concerto and, again, he sounded like a million bucks!! Great piece also! I would contribute to the list with a couple Concertos by Brazilian composers José Guerra Vicente and Alfredo Dias, both very nice pieces but almost impossible to get a hold of. They have not been published yet! Is good to hear from you Jeff. I understand you are having a blast in Portland. I was just in Boston for Charlie's Party and missed our always interesting chats over beer and wings!! Maybe next time! All the best to all in this very nice forum, especially Mr. EC. Heinz Karl |

Thank you for your suggestions above and your kind words. Welcome to our little corner of cyber space. Do you have contact info for these composers? Anything with even a hint of samba rhythm is of great interest to me. Best and keep posting here. We need contributions from South America! EC | |

| New Friend | Re: Concerto Options Dear Mr. EC, both composers are dead. Guerra Vicente was actually born in Portugal but lived a good part of his life in Rio de Janeiro. His son has done quite a lot of work getting his pieces performed and some of them published! The trumpet Concerto was premiered by myself this year with my orchestra in Bahia and he has a reduction for piano on the way. As soon as it is out I will get in touch and send you a copy. Best for now, Heinz Karl. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Concerto Options Heinz Karl, Fabulous. Thank you. Do you ever run into a former student of mine named Fabio Brum? I believe that he's back home in Brazil after 2 years with Reinhold Friedrich in Karlsruhe... Best, EC (Ed, please) |

![]() | Re: Concerto Options Great to see both Jeff and Heinz on board. Welcome to both of you. Jeff, you bring back memories of Northern Virginia (NSO trpts, Gil Mitchell etc) and Heinz, well you make me very home sick for Brasil. Congrats to both of you on successful careers! |

| New Friend | Re: Concerto Options Hi Rogerio, thanks for the welcome. I have to tell you though, Brazil is becoming less and less deserving of your homesickness!! There is so much bad stuff going on politics wise, it makes me sick!! But meanwhile, let's enjoy this forum!! Best, Heinz Karl. |

| Forte User | Ed, I remember hearing a concerto for trumpet (it may be called suite or something similar instead) where the first mvt was played on C trumpet in a neo-classical style, second was on flugel and third was on cornet. I suspect that it was Florian Schmitt's but not sure. Any guesses about this concerto? That night the trumpeter was playing with a concert band, but it may have been a band arrangment of a Symphony orchestra accompaniment.

![]() | Re: Concerto Options Thinking of pieces that require a change of instrument for each movement - I know it's not a "clever" concerto, but how about Al Vizzutti's Rising Sun? Not technically fiendish, but a superb display piece that really does show off what a trumpeter can do. It also has some very memorable melodic moments to it. Not certain whether it is available for orchestra, but it certainly exists for windband or brass band. I wouldn't suggest it for those players who like a piece where the audience has to think about what is being presented to them, but if you want a piece that allows you to show off it is fantastic. Piccolo first movement, flugel second and Bb trumpet for the third. His Emerald Concerto is very similar in style - good fun if you want something flash. |
