| Pianissimo User | First off Mr. Carroll, It's a pleasure to "meet" you. I haven't really gotten a chance to type anything worth posting in your forum. I've only been into jazz for about a year. Jazz rekindled my interest in playing (I've been playing since 5th grade and am currently in 10th.) I picked up Mahler No. 5 because I heard a lot of people on this site talking about it. It's impressive. A few of my favorite jazz songs are: Clifford Brown - Joy Spring [There's just something about it....] Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Dat Dere [What a COOL chord progression!] Dizzy Gillespie - Manteca [I love the mix of latin, big band, and bebop - I get the chills listening to this one.] Charlie Parker - Quasimado(Yes, they misspelled 'Quasimodo') [This tune is comforting - I can't quite place why.] I could go on and on, but those are my top favorites. My favorite jazz album is Dizzy Gillespie's "Afro". -BP EDIT - I just had to put this in - Charlie Parker's rendition of Hot House is great, too! |

| A few come to (my) mind Brahms Violin Sonatas 1, 3 : Szeryng & Rubinstein - if only everything could sound like a violin and all violins could sound like this, and everyone would just play music to make music like this. R. Strauss Don Quixote : Reiner/Chicago - The rare example of how perfection of interpretation and playing can make a piece better than it really is--if you're a composer, this kind of rendering has got to be the windmill of your dreams. Wagner The Ring : Solti/Vienna - You play brass and you don't know this? You're missing half of the whole tradition...giants...serpents...evil drawfs--what more do you want? Beethoven Missa Solemnis : Klemperer / (New?) Philharmonia - music and performance at absolute full power (kind of the flip side of the Don Quixote recording) Mozart Magic Flute : Klemperer / Philharmonia - ditto the above (if you want the dialog and a quick pace, look elsewhere, however) May in round two, I'll think of something actually recorded digitally |

![]() | BP, You're listening to some great stuff, especially for a 10th grader (my boys are starting 9th and 10th grades today, by the way). Keep it up! Rimshot, Did you know that Barry Tuckwell was brought in by Solti to play the Siegfried calls? It launched his long and successful solo career. Barry became an American citizen a few years back and lives in Maryland; managing his wife's political campaign(s), and trying to conduct. EC |

It is odd, the more I have thought about my choices, the more some of them stay fixed in my mind - nothing will take Louis Armstrong, Beethoven 5 or Tubular Bells from that list. btw - next time you see Paul Merkelo - say hi from Mike - I met him at ITG (I'm a friend of Rex's - a Brit who was usually found in the bar | |

| EC wrote: "Did you know that Barry Tuckwell was brought in by Solti to play the Siegfried calls?" Are you sure about that? John Culshaw was pretty clear about Roland Berger playing the calls in the 1962 Siegfried, and Roland was also numero uno horn during the '65 Gotterdammerung sessions--so I was a little taken aback to read your comment! Could that have been at Covent Garden or something like that instead? (The trouble with history is it keeps changing...) |

![]() | Rim, I'll run Barry to ground, if I can, and ask. If I learn anything new I'll pass it along via PM. I'm one of the few that didn't see the Babe "call his shot" at Wrigley, by the way. . . history does have a way of becoming History. Best, EC |

| New Friend | CDs just a couple of CDs that come to mind: Andrea Bocelli; Sentimento....the brilliance of bel canto music. trumpet at its most primitive form...the human voice. Maurice Murphy (former Principal LSO) ; the lighter side of Maurice Murphy (performing with the Leyland DAF band)....some of the most musical playing i have heard. Ed Carroll; All the King's trumpets....because i like to hear my teacher work. german brass; Bach 2000: the way an ensemble should sound like (mathias hoff is awesome) Maurice Andre'; swinging baroque-trompettissimo (baroque music with a swing section and pretty cool Ad Libs)...because he shows us there not just one way to play the repertoire. Gerard Schwarz; New Music for trumpet....when youre stranded on an island you need music to confirm you really are going crazy. anyways, just some things that come to mind, im sure there are more but i cant think of anymore right now. ill see you next week ed.
