A tardy reply to 22925H. . .

Many virtuoso European trumpeters (examples that come quickly to mind include Reinhold Friederich, formerly at the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra; Matthias Höfs, formerly at the Hamberg State Philharmonic and a member of German Brass; and John Wallace, formerly of the Philharmonia and the London Sinfonietta) have spent considerable time in symphony orchestras, and I'm sure that they play Der Rosenkavalier and the Zimmerman Concerto with equal enthusiasm. Often, however, they choose not to spend their entire careers in a principal trumpet chair due to opportunities that exist outside the orchestra. A G4 Professorship in a German Hochschule pays more than a principal position in a German Radio Orchestra (turning on its ear the old adage that "he who can play, does. . .he who can't, teaches") and, in addition to more income, the academic schedule provides much more freedom for solo and chamber music possibilities. This turnover also allows more young, talented players to move into their vacated chairs. . . good all around, dontyathink?

Best,
EC
