I've been following this thread and you have perhaps changed my dream job! Yep, playing with Buffet would be a kick! You can play with him, but I want to play the second book along side you!
I'd be honored; let's play!

Well, I went to page 1 and re-read oldlou's post. Thanks, Lou. I think we all need to read his post. Alot of wisdom there. I have begun to do some things to shore up the things I've missed. Mostly over the past few months. I feel ready should something come up. Onward, upward and forward!

Don Juan and Clarino,

Fair enough. What are you doing to have a life exactly like Manny's? How much are you practicing? How well do you know the orchestral literature (the less obvious rep.......it's a finite list aside from emerging pieces)? How many good conductors are you working with? How much are you conducting yourself?

Careers are built through having a clear goal and by hard, focused work towards that goal. Your goal is excellent. Are you doing everything you can do to achieve it?

Best,
EC

bandman will become famous soon enough
KHP --

I am at the point in my life when I want to just play for fun. I love playing church gigs, I love playng weddings, I love doing a few clinics a year for high school and middle school players who are excited about music. I would love playing a tour of gigs with a band like Buffett, but I bet I would hate being out on the road again. I'm too darn old for that, but what a kick it would be every night to pick up the horn and play a job where you could have such fun, and the audience would be sooooo into it at a parrot head event.

Funny thing to add -- my 11-year-old daughter loves Jimmy Buffett, knows all the words to most of his songs. She sings and when there is a bad word she substitutes the word "beep" like she's beeping the word out. I have hundreds of his tunes on my MP3 and we use an FM modulator to listen in the car. It can be great to hear his music for hours on end and never hear the same tune twice!

What a thread!
I have had a very good situation most of my playing life (I'll be 50 next week). I have a job that pays well and a family that is very tolerant of my playing habits (about 100 gigs a year). A dream that I have had since the early 80s was to play with a group called the New York Trumpet Ensemble as I heard them at the Madiera Festival - directed by Ed Carroll. So many monsters together - well rehearsed - has left an impression in my mind what cloud 9 could really be. In working toward that goal, I have practiced alot, formed 3 Brass Quintets and try to get as much contact as possible with great players. Those one of a kind opportunities are reserved for the very few however. To finish the dream - after being there, take that experience out to people just like me, providing motivation to strive to be the best!

I am a dedicated amatuer, and my dream music career used to be to play in a major orchestra. Now, if the sky was the limit, I'd want to live in New York City, play in Broadway shows, Jazz clubs and have a teaching studio at a university.

Robin,

Wow...I haven't been following this thread recently. You were at the Madeira Bach Festival in 1980? I met my wife at that festival (she was an audience member) and we were married in '82.

The world just got a bit smaller for me. Thank you.

Best,
EC
