Forgot to include Andre Previn's great score for "Elmer Gantry" -1960.

Re: Early influences?

I never really watched movies as a kid, but I remember hearing the trumpet all time watching (and this is where I reveal myself to be really super cool...) GOLF on tv. My dad probably was paying more attention to the golf than I was, but the coverage always had trumpet solos in and out of the commercials. I've always wondered who played those little tunes.

Dambly,

...but you also have vivid memories of pieces like Kagel's ATEM. Could these possibly be related???

Re: Early influences?

Oh, man, now you got me going! Two old (1960s) TV shows had solo trumpet fanfare openings. One was the original Hallmark Hall of Fame, and the other introduced the weekly series "The Defenders." Then there was the great Twilight Zone episode "A Passage for Trumpet," starring Jack Klugman as a boozing down-and-out jazzer who meets the angel Gabriel in a back alley of NY. And how 'bout Kirk Douglas in "Young Man with a Horn?" Somebody Stop Me!!!
