Re: The embouchure

I study with Lew Soloff from time to time. His concern w/ placement, at least pertaining to me had to do with the spot on the chops where the bottom of the rim makes contact. As long as it was not in the red of the LOWER lip, he was pleased. (BTW, he was pleased).

I've seen Chris Botti play and, although underrated as a high note man--- he plays a high G in concert-- his mpc is very high on his chops. Seems to me that if you practice smart, most any place will do.

Re: The embouchure

André,
you probably are right about some teachers paying more attention than others.
Changing an embouchure is more than just reprogramming the muscles. Depending on the psychological make up of the player, the giant step back can do a great deal of damage which would more than outweigh the benefits. This is also the reason that I say NO SELF HELP! If you and your teacher can take the step in good faith, then you have a chance.
If your professional life is centered around the trumpet, you need to get the calculator out and figure if you can afford the time. If you are a casual player, you need to figure if you want to add frustration to your life until things become predictable again. The benefits COULD be great, the path can be pretty rocky though!
I am not aware of any embouchure change that didn't involve at least a year of hard work!
