![]() | Esplanade Orchestra TMers, I passed Tanglewood last night coming home from visiting my oldest son at Bard and tuned in to their concert of movie music, presented by the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and conducted by John Williams. I know that the Esplanade Orchestra consists of a group of freelancers engaged by the BSO. Can anyone tell me who the first trumpet is this year? Whoever it was, he/she sounded terrific, as did the whole band (excellent horn playing as well). Curious and watching here, EC |

| Re: Esplanade Orchestra Ed - Chances are that it was Bruce Hall, a wonderful (and very underrated, in my opinion) Boston freelancer. He has been there for several years. (I did a few jobs with them a few weeks back and Bruce was indeed playing first.) I believe he also plays Boston Ballet. Good guy too! Tony |

![]() | Re: Esplanade Orchestra Bruce has also been splitting time with Steve Emery during the regular season. (there has been an empty chair since they promoted from within when Tom Rolfs won the principal job) -Jimi |

![]() | Re: Esplanade Orchestra Tony, As you well know this type of playing demands that you bring your chameleon suit to the stage -- purely orchestral until it's time to add a bit of commercial thrill. Whoever it was is really on top of their game. . .bravo/brava (!) Great also that they're bringing you up occasionally. Off topic, how did Maria's last record go? (we're old friends via by Brookmeyer) Best, EC Last edited by ecarroll : 08-28-2007 at 10:10 AM. |

| Re: Esplanade Orchestra Hi Ed - Yes. Bruce has those chameleon chops! Maria's recording just came out. I've only heard a few tracks, but it really sounds beautiful. She seems to be excited about it as well. Tony |
