| Piano User | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Ed, Your point is well-taken. It seems that the classical music fan-base today is centered around performers. Perhaps this is the reason so many people are satisfied with simply recycling the Tchaikovksy Violin Concerto? -Matthew Last edited by mahaberio : 01-25-2008 at 04:59 PM. |

![]() | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Matthew, Yes, and our recent dialogue is worthy of a new thread. Do you have time to compose one? I'm sure that it will generate an interesting discussion with our fellow TMers. Have you noticed that with this topic, Brent's performance degree thread, and Grass Roots that we have an unusual amount of important pots bubbling on this forum's stovetop? I'm delighted as this is what I always envisioned that TM could be. . . Best, EC |

![]() ![]() | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Just back from Cincinnati after the two concerts... meeting Hakan was like a dream come true and his playing was truly world-class. His command (on the horn and on stage), his musicality, his bravura, his class, his spirt... well, everything was fantastic! I will write a much more detailed post about some of my own personal observations and "soul searching" I had this weekend. Needless to say, on zero sleep I'm PUMPED to grab my horn and shed! -T |

![]() | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Charlie, VERY subjective, but the following pieces are composed as complex and wonderful "compositional soundscapes", not merely vehicles to show off technique (modern trumpet concerti or similar moments only. The Haydn is obviously on our radar as well): Karlheinz Stockhausen: excerpts from his operas (the late Beethoven's of our repertoire, in my opinion. Michael Blake Watkins: Trumpet Concerto Peter Maxwell Davies: Trumpet Concerto H.K. Gruber: Ariel Marc-Anthony Turnage: Dispelling the Fears and From the Wreckage Sir Harrison Birtwistle: Endless Parade Peter Eötvös: Jet Stream Jukka Linkola: Concerto for Trumpet and Trumpet Concerto No. 2 Rodion Shchedrin: Trumpet Concerto Hans Werner Henze: Requiem Bernd Alois Zimmermann: Nobody knows de trouble I see Jaan Rääts: Concerto for trumpet, piano, and strings Morton Subotnick: After the Butterfly I'm building a webpage at the moment that will include a section called "extreme repertoire". These pieces, and others will be listed, along with a few worthless EC comments. Stay tuned. Aloha, EC |

| Piano User | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Ed, What a great list (I secretly love the Haydn)! Hakan and Gruber are working on another concerto together so we can probably expect the premier of another addition later this year. Obviously subjective, but here are few that I would like to add: James MacMillan: Epiclesis Benedict Mason: Trumpet Concerto Wolfgang Rihm: Marsyas I'll wait on a recording or until I hear a performance to definitively decide, but I'm pretty confident that I'd add Olga Neuwirth's "... miramondo multiplo..." to the list. It was premiered at the 2006 Salzburg Festival by Hakan Hardenberger with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Pierre Boulez (a better combination of composer/performer/conductor/orchestra would be hard to find) and Marco Blaauw is scheduled to premiere the chamber version later this year with musikFabrik. Ed, I'm really looking forward to the website. Let us know when it's up and running! -Matthew Last edited by mahaberio : 01-28-2008 at 06:31 PM. |

![]() ![]() | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Great stuff here. I'm planning a faculty recital (half classical, half jazz) and will have to put some of this on the docket. I love the Gruber as well and can't wait to hear the new piece. Sorry we didn't hook up Matt. I left after intermission on Saturday as I wasn't feeling great and had to drive to Columbus for my 6AM flight home sunday. The Bruckner on Friday was very nice. Mark Ridenour's playing was great as well and a pleasant surprise (I thought "VACANT" was playing... that's what was listed in the program!). Needless to say Hakan has really pumped me for things to come in my own playing. I even dusted off the Eb/D and pic today (well, my new rotary pic is way too much fun to put down). Cheers, t |

![]() | Re: Hardenberg/Turnage Video Trent, I'm afraid that you won't get any material for your recital from that list. I doubt if the composer's have attempted piano reductions for any of this stuff and all utilize huge (Heldenleben size or larger) bands. I have a ton of solo and chamber music for you to consider, however. No worries, mate. Best, EC |
