Re: Joyce Hatto

This little anecdote reminded me of our recent Joyce Hatto scandal. This is the same Desenclos who gave us the wonderful Incantation, threne, et danse (which more trumpet players should check out).

"Desenclos' Messe de requiem was written in 1963 and published by Durand et Fils in 1967. In 1999 the piece was reprinted under the name of Atlanta-based composer Tristan Foison. Foison's mass was given its "American premiere" on 18 May 1999 in a performance by the Capitol Hill Chorale - but soon after the piece was discovered to be a note-for-note duplicate of Desenclos's requiem from 1963."

What a musical world.

Re: Joyce Hatto

Matthew,

I've heard of at least one famous trumpeter fabricating academic credentials before and the Hatto case fascinates me as it's tied to new and emerging technolgy (have you seen the new iPhones, by the way? Tres cool), but outright plagerism of a musical work is absolutely astonishing.

Do you have a link to this story somewhere?

Thanks,
EC (working on my Turangulila)

ROGERIO is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Joyce Hatto

We joke, but this may be our Savior.
It will get to a point where nothing is believable unless heard LIVE.

EC, ... and I loved those cornet solo recordings... on LP... orange cover... how sad I am now... how naive of me.

"ladies and gentleman, come one, come all... inside the big tent you will see a real human being playing the trumpet... all notes coming from his very lips... you will see it happen with your very own eyes... come one, come all... get your ticket right here".
