Kurt Weill 2nd Symphony

Hi Ed,
I have this piece coming up in June. Have you played it before? Anything "juicy"?
I know Weill pretty well (3 Penny Opera and div. chamber music), but don't have much poop on this piece.

Re: Kurt Weill 2nd Symphony

Robin,

I guess I have a few holes in my repertoire -- I didn't know that Weill was a symphonist, always associating his music with 20's Berliner decadence, smoke-filled clubs, Gustav Klimt, Bertold Brecht, Lotte Lenya, etc. rather than the Philharmonie.

I've played Die Dreigroschenoper, Kleine Dreigroschenmusik, and bits of Mahagonny, but that's about it.

Others?

Best,
EC (the Knife)

Re: Kurt Weill 2nd Symphony

Robin,

I don't know it either. But if we're mentioning Weil pieces: The Seven Deadly Sins is a great piece. I heard the Vienna Philharmonic play it this summer and it was one of the best pieces I've ever heard that I didn't know.

Matt,

I have a good recording of The Seven Deadly Sins with David Atherton/London Sinfonietta that you should check out sometime.

Best,

Re: Kurt Weill 2nd Symphony

I love Weill's 2nd Symphony. It's very connected with the piece mentioned above, the Seven Deadly Sins. Two good recordings are Nagano's with the Lyon Orchestra and Jansons's recording with the Berlin Phil. (extended trumpet solo right near the beginning). The Lyon recording couples the 2nd symphony with a nice recording of The Seven Deadly Sins. The Berlin one couples it with the suite from "The Rise and Fall of Mahagony" and the Violin Concerto with Frank Peter Zimmermann playing (one of my favorite violinists). The violin concerto has a beautiful cadenza for violin and trumpet solo in the second movement.
