L'Orfeo

TMers,

Many of you have played this little curtain raiser (the first time trumpets appeared in the theater, if I'm not mistaken). Nice to hear it in context, isn't it?

YouTube - Monteverdi - L'Orfeo - Savall

Score and set of parts: http://earlybrass.com/MEBE1007.pdf

Enjoy,
EC

PS: I visit Monteverdi's tomb every time I'm in Venice, partly out of respect to a genius composer and also because I see the mountains of Vermont from my property in New Hampshire. . .

Re: L'Orfeo

Ed - thanks for that, fascinating indeed.

Having heard and played this in various arrangements, hearing it without an echo line to the semiquaver runs is quite unusual. Maybe I need to rehash (for want of a better word) my own arrangement to get closer to what was originally written?

Re: L'Orfeo

TM,

You're welcome. This is important music, both in quality and historically, for our instrument. Our repertoire is a continuum and we have to know here it started to fully appreciate where we find ourselves today...

Happy Christmas to you and yours,
EC (used to love the films on the BBC during the holidays)

This is a fantastic clip. I'm familiar with Savall as a Viola da Gamba virtuoso but wasn't aware he also conducts (shows what I know about today's early music scene). I have the Emmanuelle Haïm recording of the full opera and it's quite impressive.

Re: L'Orfeo

Savall has made many fine recordings. Thank you for posting him.
There is a Lully collection he did with the Orchestre des Nations which is just fantastic, just to name one.

Matthew & Rg,

A little Jordi story:

My soon-to-become wife and I rented a cottage in the Algarve (Portugal) between gigs at the Algarve and Madiera Bach Festival back in 1982. My mornings were spent practicing in a fabulous stone church (they were kind to provide me with a key) and afternoons were spent on the beach.

In the evenings we would pass the church on our short toddle into town for dinner and were surprised to find a concert about to start by a then unknown (at least to me) group called Hesperion XX, directed by Jordi Savall, in a program of Neopolitan Renaissance music. We ducked in and sat in the back, ready to leave when we determined the concert to be less than wonderful ( I do that alot). The band, featuring Bruce Dickey, started and it was one of the truly astonishing moments in my musical life. I remember it like it was yesterday. Needless to say, we stayed for the entire show and had drinks afterwards with Bruce.

Bruce Dickey is worth another thread sometime. I consider him one of the two finest practitioners of "brass playing" (even though the cornetto isn't exactly a "brass" instrument) in recent history, standing alongside Timofei Dokshitzer (and ahead of Hakon, Sergei, Reinhold, Dizzy, Miles, Brookmeyer, Wynton, etc. -- pretty heady company!) in that respect. He's an absolute poet -- more perfect in his fluency than anyone I've ever heard play. Find his CDs, quickly (!)

Happy holidays,
EC

Re: L'Orfeo

My first and lasting impression of Bruce Dickey is respect. His playing does not draw attention to his own artistry, but draws you much deeper into the music. I also would place him on top of the pack for this. Find his CDs, quickly (!)

Good first CD: London Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble plays Gabrieli Canzoni e Sonate multiple choir stuff. Play this and the Chicago/Cleveland/Philadelphia recording back to back and you have the complete spectrum of what is humanly possible!

Re: L'Orfeo

I have heard Dickey , when he came here with Concerto Palatino. And he is very much an artist and absolutely well worth seeking out. I have the Gabreili recording and agree with Ruwuk's assesment.
Savall and Dickey are two people whose recordings I do seek out, although I am not as fond of the soprano , Savall's wife , who is on many of his recordings. (Just personal taste.) But the instrumental parts are as good as it gets.
