Dear all,

What a week. For my sins I'm Acting Assistant Dean at CalArts this term and in charge of financial aid (absolutely no fun playing God with money, as you can well imagine). Between this, registration, and an upcoming announcement (tease), my dance card has been overflowing.

Not too full, however, to think of this thread. . . a few more comments to keep it alive.

Marco Blaauw (”From the very first moment I imagined a troubadour, who by the means of his art spreads news. That’s exactly what I want – by the means of my trumpet.”) is the brilliant young Dutch trumpeter that replaced Marcus Stockhausen in the solo trumpet role of the archangel Michael in Stockhausen Senior's opera productions. He has developed a double-belled trumpet and plays a very interesting mix of solo and ensemble works. Check him out at http://www.marcoblaauw.com

Jason Price http://www.jasonpainterprice.com is an American of similar brilliance to watch out for. He's a fearless trumpeter, interesting composer, and creative soul. Keep an ear out for Jason and his group Alarm Will Sound, and turn down the gain on your headphones. Jason is the real deal too.

More soon,
EC

What about cutting edge jazz trumpeters like:

Matt Shulman
etc?

What are you thoughts on this Ed?

Best,

Trent

Matthias Hofs is just an amazing amazing AMAZING musician and trumpet player...one of the best piccolo players out there, not to mention every other horn out there.

Cassone has a great recording on the Berio Sequenza X. What a beast of a piece!

Hi Ed,

Great list of some great musicians, some of whom are flying totally under the radar and yet are making amazing musical statements. I picked up the Alarm Will Sound recording of Aphex Twin arrangements. It is mind-blowing! But just want to mention another name. I went to see Peter Evans set during FONT and it was incredible. It was like listening to Hendrix!

Well, I have to finish packing before I meet up with zony.

Cheers,
CG

Yeah I'm surpised that Matthias isn't more well-known in American circles. I would consider him one of the best around

Charlie,

Mentioning our friend Peter Evans (note: Peter and Charlie were both at the last Lake Placid seminar in 2003, for you keeping score at home) allows me a way to answer Trent. Some of the names on my original list (Jason, Dan) play incredible free jazz as well, and I've always felt that the next household name trumpet "soloist" will be facile in many styles and obliterate pre-conceived boundaries. Markus Stockhausen (no stranger to cutting edge music and improv) called Peter the most talented American trumpeter/musician that he had ever heard that summer. I might agree. He's the real deal, and then some.

I can nominate another group at some point, if you wish. . .

Trent,

Matt's incredible (another Lake Placidian, ta bloody da!). Who else can you recommend to us?

Best,
EC

Last year at the FONTmusic final concert, I sat next to Peter Evans. There were quite a few new faces, some that looked like they did not have to shave. It's a funny feeling going from being at one point in your career the kid in the group, to being the most senior guy......"Pops," one kid called me. I would have smacked him, but he was 6'2" and weighed about 220
I had to stop playing when Peter started making some of the most amazing sounds next to me
Matt's posture is so correct that I found myself sitting up a little when I glanced over at him. His use of multi-phonics was nothing short of amazing.

A few more comments to keep this thread alive.

Take a look at http://giulianosommerhalder.com if you'd like to follow this young virtuoso's career. His calendar of solo appearances should be of particular interest to those of you who think that a career as a soloist is impossible.

Also check out http://www.joukoharjanne.com Jouko's rather well known, but I'd guess that not many of you own more than one of his recordings on Finlandia. Buy them all and listen to a super player and musician.

Lastly, look at http://danielrosenboom.com Dan will be releasing his first CD on Ninewinds Records around the first of the year and trust me when I say that I've never heard a better, or more interesting, solo trumpet CD (I've listened to raw takes and was absolutely blown away by both the program of important new pieces and by Dan's performance).

I'm encouraged by all of this. Aren't you?

Best,
EC

Revisiting this post:

Some of my favorite "cutting edge" "names to watch" jazzers are:

Cuong Vu
Dave Douglas
Dave Ballou
Matt Shulman
Russ Johnson
Alex Sipiagin
Ralph Alessi

Some of my favorite "post bop/straight ahead" "names to watch" jazz players are:

John Swana
Ryan Kisor
Jim Rotondi
Nicholas Payton
Jeremy Pelt
Diego Urcola
Greg Gisbert (quite possibly my FAVORITE trumpeter... he's by far the most underrated jazz trumpeter out there... he can play ANYTHING!)

I'm sure I'm forgeting some people... so I'll probably revise this list in the next few days.

Best,

Trent
