Oh Ed,

I have been thoroughly enjoying your forum and learning a great deal. I guess I have been soaking it all up, since many of the threads actually cover new territory for me. I plan on finally taking part in the discussions. Really, your forum is wonderfully varied and of course, unique. It is a reflection of you afterall. Thanks for the nod.

Hartelijk groetjes, Alex

I was fortunate enough to play lead in Lab2 at UofO with Brian McWhorter when he was a freshman. He had a fantastic sound and was a great soloist. I had always wondered what happened to him.

Groggles,

This is a perfect example of my belief that if you can really play (and God knows Giuliano can!), your virtuosity can be applied in any context (in this case one of the most traditional, and best, German orchestras)

Thanks for the word -- and welcome to TM and I'll e-mail Giuliano,
EC

Groggles,

I pulled this off of Giuliano's website as an example of what can be accomplished at a young age...

Best,
EC

* Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1985 to a family of musicians and raised in Switzerland and Italy, Giuliano Sommerhalder started playing trumpet at the age of seven. From 1996 to 2004 he studied with his father, Max Sommerhalder, at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany. In 2004 he graduated from the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Como, Italy, as a student of Pierluigi Salvi. He received further training from Hans Gansch at the Salzburg Mozarteum, as well as from Maurice André, Eric Aubier, Stephen Burns, Edward Carroll, Markus Stockhausen, Pierre Thibaud, James Thompson, and others. He has received scholarships from the Lake Placid Institute for the Arts and Humanities and from the Interlochen Center for the Arts in the U.S.A, as well as a Gerd Bucerius Scholarship from the ZEIT Foundation in Hamburg

By the time he graduated from secondary school, Giuliano had already achieved second prize at the A.R.D. International Music Competition in Munich, one of the most demanding and prestigious contests worldwide, and had been second to none in the Concours Maurice André in Paris, the Prague Spring Music Competition, the Timofei Dokshitzer Competition in Vilnius, the Trumpet Competition at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatorium, the Concertino Praga competition and many others. Still in his teens, he was featured at the Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern festivals in Germany as well as at Yuri Bashmet’s Elba Festival in Italy and at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in the U.S.A.. He can look back on countless appearances as a soloist in front of orchestras such as the Zurich Tonhalle, the national Radio Symphony Orchestras of the Czech Republic and Poland, the German Südwestfunk, Saarländischer Rundfunk and NDR, the Italian Philharmonic, the Moscow Soloists, the Chamber Orchestras of Munich, Zurich, Mantua, Lithuania, and the European Union, just to name a few, and had signed the contract for his U.S. debut with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Giuliano Sommerhalder received European Cultural Awards in Munich (1999) and Berlin (2002).
