Groggles,

I just talked with Max and Giuliano has a difficult decision -- Loren Maazel offered him the solo trumpet chair in his new orchestra in Valencia as well.

Best,
EC

Groggles is an unknown quantity at this point
i know that he also has the offer there. I think whatever orchestra he takes he wont stay to long. i think in gewandhaus he would have too much dienst to be able to maintain his solo career. still there are 8 trumpets in gewandhaus.. but a nice problem to have in any case!!

Re: Names to Watch?

Jason Price does AMAZING work with Alarm Will Sound (www.alarmwillsound.com) as well as the solo work that he does. I'd love to see more availability of Cassone's recordings, especially of modern stuff.

Also check out Pasi Pirinen, he plays in the Finnish Radio Symphony with Jouko Harjanne and just released a solo cd of music by Jolivet, Harri Wessman, Jarmo Sermilä, Erkki Jokinen, and Hindemith. He also plays a wonderful rendition of the Davies Sonata. (http://www.musicfinland.com/pirinen/)

Bert Langenkamp plays in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and also just released a solo cd of music for trumpet and organ. (http://www.trumpetguild.org/news/new...ngenkampcd.htm)

Speaking of the Concertgebouw, Peter Masseurs also recently released a CD that's fairly widely available.

If you don't know her (surprisingly many trumpet players don't), check out Alison Balsom. She's gained popularity recently but for a while even after she released her debut CD she was a fairly obscure name in the trumpet world. Her recording of the Eben "Okna" is amazing and for $8 on amazon.com you can't go wrong.

Yes. I remember him when he was a high school kid from Oak Park, used to hit the jam sessions. Really terrific at a young age.

Michael,

I was a high school kid from Oak Park years ago myself.

What a hotbed of trumpet playing: Amir (it seems), Will Scarlett, myself, and that old guy in the CSO who turned red so much...

Thanks for the hometown memory,

So you were south of the Eisenhower. Did you go to OPRF? I taught trumpet for years there during the end of Doc Holliman's tenure.

Michael,

I did my Freshman and Sophmore years at OPRF with John Holliman and John Driggs before moving on to the Interlochen Arts Academy. I'm afraid that we're talking '67-'69 here (played varsity baseball as well)

Small world,

I interviewed for the job at OPRF about ten years ago or so after Steve Jensen passed. At the time there was a saxophonist from OPRF who I also taught at Merit. He was one of the most unpleasant know-it-all teenagers ever. The night before the interview I had a dream that I was strangling this student. I told Doc Holliman of my dream in the interview, and he smacked the table with his palm and said,"You're hired, anyone who wants to strangle [name deleted] is OK in my book!" Thus started my tenure at OPRF. When Holliman left his replacement brought his own trumpet guy in and I was on the outs. It coincided with my increased involvement with Merit so it was OK, it all worked out.
So, Ed, you and Ernest Hemingway! OPRF alums.

....don't forget Frank Lloyd Wright as well. He lived north of the Eisenhower though (unlike Bud et moi)

Loving this,
