![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Nouveau College Thread: diversify please? Robin, There might be some relationship between language and playing -- I'm not sure, but could be easily convinced. My original post concerned professional prospects, however. An example: I'm giving masterclasses in Novarra (Italy), Bergamo (Italy), Bilbao (Spain), and Zaragosa (Spain) in May. Cassone will serve as translator for my 2 classes in Novarra, somebody else in Bergamo (?), and a former student in Spain. This works, of course, but not perfectly. I won't dare discuss subtle concepts. As mentioned on another thread, I gave a two week residency at the St. Petersburg Conservatory back in the '90s and was unbelieveably fortunate that Leah Schuman, a former Cichowicz and Thompson student, was studying there at the time and could speak fluent Russian. Imagine what the translation of "flow study" might have been if my translator were somebody from an office ("pamphlet of moving hydro-something"?) (yikes). I've encountered something similar in other countries (Japan, China) where English was rare. My career would be GREATLY enhanced by speaking Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Mandarin. Especially the latter in tomorrow's world. Best, EC |

I have always thought that mother language (or rather its phonetic) influnce somewhat articultation on wind instruments...What does your teaching experience say about this?
