For what it's worth, I just bought a new Eastman Bb cornet that comes with a warburton mouthpiece. I love the horn and even more after I bought a very old Levy cornet mouthpiece. Add a Jo-Ral bubble mute, and you have an amazing sounding and playing instrument at a fairly reasonable cost.

Hi Dale,

yeah, he sure does sound good. --I really appreciate your comments about antique horns. Having no experience with them, it helps to hear your informed thoughts.

To Tom and Bill,

I am looking for new sounds--different ways to approach new challenges and sonorities for unconventional collaborations(with electronic or acoustic musicians).

I'm a student, so I have been thinking that an older instrument would kill two birds with one stone(if I were to cross a playable horn). I'd get my #1. unique sound #2. in my price range. It seems the consensus is that it would be more practical to acquire a range of tools to help address my interests(a curry mouthpiece or some more mutes) or have a look at some more affordable cornets like the eastman Bb. This totally makes sense to me.--but just for kicks I'll keep my eye out on craigslist, for what pops up in the LA area.

I appreciate everyone's input and will continue to watch from DC,

best in the new year,
-chris

Re: old horns and new music

The thing about vintage horns is LOVE...... if you play it and fall in love with it then that´s the name of the game! For instance, you have to play it, and recently I was in a very well known London shop and blew the Martin Committee they had from the 40´s... it was interesting, but not mind or bodyblowing.... then I tried my besson C and it was love at first sight, with a little bit of lust! I couldn´t believe it when the said this was 200 pounds as apposed to the Martin´s 1600. What the hell is happening! So now I have a reverse C from the fifties which has all the slides for a Bb peeshooter (great for a silent burlesque cinema gig I did recently!) and there´s love.... a subject I think I´ll bring up on Wilmer´s forum........

Ian,

Terrific post. Thank you.

By all means start a thread on Wilmer's forum. He's our resident specialist on all things related to the heart :)

Cheers,
