Re: Ornamentation in Baroque/Renaissance contexts

Robin,

Good morning.

I agree completely about Ed Tarr. Also Niklas Eklund (a phenomenal nat player).

We can add Gabriele Cassone (who I have at Chosen Vale, by the way. His nat and keyed trumpet playing is as effortless as his modern playing), Friedemann Immer, Dennis Ferry (an occasional visitor to TM), John Thiessen, Jean Francois Madeuf (wow), Crispian Steele-Perkins (countless other Brits - the nat culture there is tremendous), and many others from around the world to the list as well.

Few, however, ornament. Nor should they, in my opinion, due to the very nature of most trumpet music. There are some notable (natable?) exceptions, of course. Dennis' ornamentation on his recording of Scarlatti Arias for voice, trumpet, and continuo is fabulous. He was able to spin lines of pure gold in dialogue with the text in spite of being limited to the harmonic series (Mio Tesoro comes instantly to mind).

For the piston players, I still recommend listening to Matthias.

Cheers,
EC

Re: Ornamentation in Baroque/Renaissance contexts

If anyone is interested in tastefully done early music on modern instruments, then check out Ray Mase's transcriptions and recordings with the ABQ. Ray used to play cornetto in the New York Cornett and Sackbutt ensemble when that group still existed, and he has a solid understanding of Renaissance ornamentation. That carries over to his modern transcriptions and recordings as well. Some of his publications include ornamentation in "small notes" with opposite stems imbedded in the printed music.
