Re: The performance degree...myth or reality?

I seriously considered going to Berklee when I was college age, but I don´t think it was just the money that stopped me... I think it was the fact that the preparation was very much towards a "commercial" music making scene, and i had already decided that i didn´t have the stomach for that.

Still, if I could have hung out with Ed and Leo 25 years ago at CalArts, I think I would have jumped at the chance! (Ed, the check is in the post!).

I suppose it´s about how well you know yourself, and how you wish to develop. Identity can be inspired by hanging out and developing with your peers, just as much as listening to he masters. If there is an opportunity to do that, in or out of college, always grab it!

Amen, Brother Ian, and I'll pass half the fee to Wadada. :)

Really. . . I can't agree with the above more. Thanks for your thoughtful response.

Best,

Re: The performance degree...myth or reality?

I have always wanted to go to berklee. It gives the opportunity to still be rooted strongly in music performance even if majoring in music business etc.. I love music and thats what I have to do with my life but I just don't know that I can make it playing trumpet and I don't want to teach. So, I am transferring and switching my major from performance to music business or technology, but the program at the school I am transferring to does not really deal with musicality or performance. I am hoping my background in music gives me an edge, and maybe I can become good enough to play professionally. I think every day about staying and finishing my performance degree, but hopefully I will have time to finnish a performance major at the new school, and if not, I will at least have a minor.

Re: The performance degree...myth or reality?

Thinking more and more about this topic, it comes down to what music is and what purpose it serves in society. For months I was caught in a down-spiral, considering music to be superfluous and inconsequential, but now, after reading Aristotle and Adler, viewing di Vinci and Degas and listening with fresh ears to Mozart and Mahler, art has morphed from arduous to effortless and has once again begun to change my life.

Brent,

This is, for me, the most powerful thing ever said in my forum. Thank you and welcome back to the club!
