![]() ![]() | Amen to that... Maurice is the man. I still remember my art teacher in HS giving me a copy of Maurice's playing. It was my first exposure to classical music and I loved every note of it. I think I personally used to "pigeonhole" myself. Back to shedding! |

| Trent Sounds great by the way! Clearly you have the facility to play whatever genre of music you choose. Its a fascinating discussion, reinvention, I think a lot of trumpet players get terrified of being pigeon holed in all ways. Be it within a genre, 1st, 2nd, freelance etc, or cross Genres, Jazzer, Commercial, West End, Broadway, Orchestral, soloist. Its all crazy, as long one has the musicality and the facility available one can do whatever one wants. I do think however its very wise (or nice) for all of us to, if possible, have time inbetween to adjust. I remember Marsarlis stating he would take 3 weeks to adjust between Classical and Jazz. As Ed pointed out, what seems to be happening with the new generation is players are learning to switch much faster, and cutting down the recovery/adjusting time. There's a few pop gigs where I'm based, so with the help of a few method, books the odd mouthpiece and lessons off some lead players I've managed to do a reasonable job of them and not feel too bad the next day. But I felt so paranoid at first about the fact that "I'm a classical player" , I soon relaxed as that is one good thing about the fresh scene here as people really don't care about that. You're either a musician or you not. You clearly. Also, I think its worth mentioning that, it is hard to be a jack of all trades etc, its possible but hard, and I think its also a bit heart breaking as you'll always be compared with someone who speciallises in just that area, which would be a tall order to match. Just like a when footballer switches position. |
