Re: Record Yourself

I started recording myself about 6 months ago and I can't even begin to tell you the improvment it has made in my playing. I've actually grown more in the last week than I have in the last year chops wise. I am noticing my articulation is a lot better since recording just like the rest of you are mentioning.
This is a great idea.... trent was right on the money
Peace

The proof is in the pudding. Your playing on Sail Away shows the great progress you speak of.

Yeah man!

Thanks Trent!
I am currently working on some new tunes to lay down for my own education purposes. I always do this stuff in one take with no overdubs but this time I think I'm gonna try to do a few more takes in order to "sift through" my playing after a few choruses. I'm wondering how fresh I can keep my ideas after 10 takes?
Thanks for the comments ( coming from you it means something !)
Peace
Matt

Re: Record Yourself

I believe if you can't do it in two takes, you can't do it. It really helps in the studio for me.

Then I don't have to hear that I play my "bag of trick" on all 25 takes.

DOAH!!!!
know how that feels man...
Nothing hurts more than John La Barbera telling you to play a different lick this time because you played that one lick the last 4 times while recording with a big band under his direction. Of course he usually smiles, shakes his head, and chalks it up to youth on my part. I've yet to enlighten him to the fact that I'm 32 now. He taught me when I was 17 at Skidmore and I think he perpetually thinks of me as "that good young trumpeter"
Oh well, what he doesn't know won't hurt him LOL!

Side note: I did consider that fact that he is so much older than I am that no matter how old I get he'll always think of me as the young guy, but I decided against this line because he might challenge me to a race up the steps .... in which case he would WHOOOOOOOOUP ME!
Peace
Matt

Re: Record Yourself

During my last jury, my trumpet teacher suggested that I start recording myself. I bought a tascam 8 track hard disc recorder and record myself about 4 days a week. I would record myself at work but do to the confidentiality of our products, I can't take recording devices there. It has made a huge improvement in my playing. It's like getting a free trumpet lesson. I try to think of what I would tell a student to do to improve and tell myself. I just recorded a mach recital for preparation and could tell immediately what to work on.

Trent,

Few years ago I received an advice concerning articulation practice from Maurice Andre during a masterclass, which was to practice in the corner of the room against the wall...it is not like recording but it is great approach and I still use it from time to time...Sometimes you may not notice things but you can hear much more clearer what is happening , 'cause the sound reflected by the wall is striking you in the ears...it is not very pleasant, but works great. I would not use it on daily basis, but ocassionaly it is helpful...Or, what about alternating recording with against-the wall practice?

Re: Record Yourself

Trent-

I'm all for recording oneself regularly. Here's some thoughts.

1. One teacher said to record everything and play it back immediately. That way, you can "rest as much as you play", in addition to the other obvious benefits.

2. It can help you learn how your sound interacts with room acoustics, how the AUDIENCE hears you in front of the bell. It can give you an idea of your sound's directionality. See how subtle movements in horn position can change your sound as the audience hears it.

3. It can help you learn to play with intensity. If you can tranfer your intensity when you "print to tape", you're in good shape. Do all the sublties in your playing make it to the playback? Play it back at a softer volume. Does it still sound good or do you depend on loud volumes for intensity?

4. Edirol R9 is a flash recorder that is very small, very light and makes good quality recordings. The mic is built-in and it records to flash card. It's smaller than a deck of cards and about as light as a pack of cigarettes. Fits in your shirt pocket. Check it out.

Re: Record Yourself

[quote=HoboTrumpet;288473]What kind of tape recorder do you guys use to record your playing? Is there such a thing as a small digital recorder (like one of those mini-cassette recorders only digital) a person can buy? I have an old Radio Shack cassette player that I use, but the mic is going haywire and I'm looking to upgrade.

Here is what I am looking into for a small digital recorder - Olympus

I think it is a great deal at $29.99

Re: Record Yourself

Hey Trent,
recording stuff is useful, but when you turn the tape on, your brain goes into protected mode - it really is not a representation of your real life playing.
I did this for a couple of years (Panasonic cassette deck/revox reel to reel/Technics PCM/Kenwood portable DAT/Fostex VF16), but started concentrating more on the technical perfection of my own playing instead of going with the flow of the ensemble during performances. I found myself also getting frustrated with my colleagues technical shortcomings. After some discussions about "sterile", I woke up.
Recording yourself is OK, evaluating what you hear needs to kept in perspective!
Getting external help generally means getting fresh ideas instead of just polishing your own frame of reference! Good luck!
One of the best values in microphones that i have found is the Beringer B2. It is a large diaphragm condenser mic that really sounds good up close and at a distance!
