Spada Bach vs. Spada Bel Canto

Ed,

I know that the Spada bach are very good horns, but recently I got their trumpet catalog where they advertise the Spada bal canto trumpets also. I just wanted to know if you have had any experience with those horns.

Re: Spada Bach vs. Spada Bel Canto

Luis,

I played a Spada/Bach C for a few years in the Rotterdam Philharmonic and have a different one (a Spada/Bach/Blackburn combination that used to belong to Balazs Nemes, the wonderful Hungarian playing now in the Franfurt Radio Orchestra) in my collection today. It's a super horn and I'd guess that Rene's modifications to a Bel Canto might be effective as well -- I've just never played (or seen) one.

Best,
EC

Thank you for the information, I hope to own a Spada horn someday.

Re: Spada Bach vs. Spada Bel Canto

Luis,

When buying my B flat Bach-Spada I tried the first Bel canto bell he came out with, but it did not feel right FOR ME. I found it a bit too dark for the rest of the configuration I chose, but some people seem to like it. I ended up with a Bach 72 bell and I guess that if you like bell canto you may need to ask for some heavier bracings in roder to match the bell...just guessing. Best is to try it yourself and have a chat with Rene or Vincenz...

Re: Spada Bach vs. Spada Bel Canto

I've tried a Spada Bach C with a pitch finder and also played a couple of days with a Spada Bel Canto Bb. The Bach C was a really nice instrument, absolutely wonderful to play. Would really like to compare it side-to-side to a Yamaha Chicago when I get a chance. The Bel Canto was a bit weird. It was a really freeblowing horn with a nice sound, but when it was cold it got HORRIBLY flat. Don't know what caused it to be so bad.. thinner piping or different metal in the bell or whatnot, but it was a real problem. I remember having to put the tuning slide all the way in always when picking the trumpet up. And I've never had to do this on any other trumpet.

trumpetnick,

How is the intonation on the fourth line Dīs, Fourth space Ebīs and Eīs, are they too flat? like in most regular Bachs, except maybe for the ones with 25 RLeadpipe.

Luis,

As I far as I can remember, I did not notice anything too far from the usual intonationwise. The D, E and E flat was a bit flat, but they are on the regular Bach bell as well. I would say that the intonation is not better or worst then the regular Bach tuning bell, but the sound was a bit weird to me.
