What repertoire would you be angling towards Mike? For repertoire beyond the 8 myself I've been using the other pieces on the ABRSM 8 list and then some of the lower level diploma stuff (though I'm not thinking of taking it) for rep.

Get hold of some solo CDs and choose repertoire that appeals to you.
Read through some of the posts on here (and elsewhere) and if people are raving about a piece, take a look at it.

The way I discovered some repertoire was by looking through the bargain bins in music shops and just buying anything for solo trumpet. Some of it I have hardly touched since then, others have found themselves in my recital lists (Hohne Slavische Fantasie is one of these). Looking through music catalogues can also be a great source of inspiration (June Emerson, Robert King, those sort of places) - although this can become very expensive

We have a conductor with one of the orchestras that I play with who is so good, it is just like getting a lesson. Somehow he finds the time for the brass section, even although the strings need more coaching.
For all of my classical solo work, i have an 86 year old, retired, old school orchestra player (I will be 50 next week) who pays attention to what is necessary. It is amazing what he finds and offers! I don't think that one should go it alone. There are so many helpful, qualified people out there.
I remember a video of Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle preparing Bach Cantata 51. I think his mentor was there too!

Luciano Pavarotti tells the story that when he was studying at La Scala, practicing scales, arpeggios, arias, excerpts, more scales and arpeggios he became, at length, sick of it and began to wonder when he could stop and call himself a singer.
He was going up the stairs to the rehearsal halls one day when he spotted the greatest Italian tenor of the day coming down. After they greeted each other, Pavarotti said earnestly, "Maestro -- tell me -- when did you stop practicing?"
The famous tenor looked at his watch.
"About five minutes ago." he said.
