Re: Trumpeting Diversity!

Dambly’s link is an interesting one, and I’ll step out on a limb here (and possibly into my own mouth) by suggesting that lack of diversity may be connected to a lack of true section playing. A matched section sound is darned difficult to achieve—the principal player has somewhat the luxury of playing with his own distinctive voice; the section players must not only match style, but sound and intonation as well. When it happens, it is amazing, and while it helps for a section to play together for a long time, it can happen in pick-up orchestras as well. Good section playing requires genuine humility, and it is no surprise that the finest players are often the most humble!

The principal player cannot lead into diverse paths unless the section will follow.
