Right now I feel as though I only have one piece that fits into this topic

Haydn Concerto Mvt 1.

I can play the rest of it but have mainly only worked that mvt because it is my jury piece this semester. There are a few others which I plan to work up to put into my repitoire before I graduate: Carnival of Venice, Buglers' Holiday (all parts), Der Holle Rache, Goedicke Concert Etude, and a few others.

I know for being a college student that it may seem like I am lacking in the rep. department, but I never really listened to much standard lit before. I always wanted to be a teacher and didn't think it was an important aspect. (boy was I wrong) Thanks to sites like this and TH, I decided to by Haydn over Christmas Break and started working on it and loved it so much that it expanded my horizons from wanting to do Jazz into all forms of music. I played in an orchestra concert a week ago and never really cared about orchestra before this semester. My attitude to music has matured so much these past few months, and I seriously contribute that to finding what else is out there, with the help of the Haydn Concerto showing me that classic lit can be fun to play.

I agree with Philippe, pieces I think I own, I want to play everywhere, for everybody. The only one I have from the standard rep is Parable.

Interesting topic. There are few pieces I will claim to "own," simply because, when I say I own it...someone will play the crap out of it and make me think...maybe I need to learn that over again.

Turrin's Someone to Watch over Me, however, is one that I feel I own. Sure, it's one simple...i mean, ridiculously simple piece, by technique's standards...but in the musical sense...this song, to me, will always be a dream to play, simply because with it, I have been able to draw visible emotion from audience members-that to me means a lot.

I hope to eventually "own" Ewazen's Sonata also. Tons of fun, that piece. Guess we'll see what happens in January, when graduate school starts, to see what I'll be working on mostly...

Great topic Ed!

There are only few pieces I'd say I truly own. I know I might sound like I'm making it up but here they are:

Ewazen- Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. This piece is one that I have been working on for years and even when I'm not actively performing it I find myself coming back to it. I have performed it, competed with it, used it on auditions, you name it. It's a joy to play.

Ewazen- Aftershock for Solo Trumpet. I originally heard this on Chris Gekker's album Winter. I liked it so much that I asked Eric for the music. I believe I am the only person who has ever played it live (it was writted as a prelude to A Hymn for the Lost and the Living for Chris's CD)

Thomas Reeves- Sonata for Trumpet. I most definitely own this one because I commissioned it! Thomas and I are going to be recording it this summer and there's a possibility of a performance at the 2009 ITG conferance.

Stravinsky- L'Histoire du Soldat. I've been working on this for months now and am absolutely in love with it. I'll be performing it with my school (suite version sadly) on Friday and I'll post recordings as soon as possible.

Those are the four that come to mind when I say I truly own them. Others that I know well and love to play but I might not quite put them on the "own" list are:

Ewazen- Quintet for Trumpet and Strings
Arban- Carnival of Venice (there's a video of that on youtube...)
Halsey Stevens- Sonata
