Zwilich Concerto

NYTMers,

I hope that somebody will go to these performances and give us a full report: http://www.playbillarts.com/news/article/4230.html

2 bits of trivia: Ellen Taaffe Zwilich was a producer for Delos records before gaining her well deserved reputation as a composer. Gerry Schwarz' SOUND OF TRUMPETS (which I believe was Delos' Opus 1) was produced by Ellen. I played mostly unnoticed second trumpet on this CD, by the way, and it was Gerry's last before handing the reins of the New York Trumpet Ensemble to me.

Also, Bram Tovey has a huge reputation as a conductor of English brass bands in addition to his post as MD of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Watching here,
EC

Hey Ed,

Did I see your name in the program for part of our "Minimalist Jukebox" series last weekend, playing "In C"? If I'd known you were in town, we could have certaily used some help with the Andriessen pieces we did - holy cow was that stuff hard!

Yeah - De Staat I think, plus a new one - "Songs from Hell". Funny you should describe it that way as one of my colleagues said exactly the same thing.

They recorded it for iTunes (was that great thinking or what? ).

Jim,

"In C" on steroids. It's commonly done with 7 or 8 players but flexible instrumentation allows most anything. The CalArts performance was for 127, I believe, and must have sounded incredible on that stage. Stuart Dempster was in the band, as was Terry Riley.

I might have been listed in the program (as a member of the faculty ensemble " New Millennium Players") but was back in Montreal conducting my new orchestra (terrific) and giving a trumpet theater concert with my kids at McGill. Both were great fun, as "In C" must have been.

I like Louis' music, by the way. He remains a music icon in Holland -- deservedly so.

Back in LA next Tuesday and would love to get together sometime,
EC
