Thanks to all for your warm welcome. I feel the LOVE !
The Wise One is a modest man,and if you would pardon the pun,he is not fond of blowin' his own trumpet.
Were he not a vegetarian,I would have made him a "Philly cheesesteak"
offer to have him do more fingering on his computer keyboard, instead,I'll extend an offer of a "soft pretzel" and watch the shape of things to come.

As jazz lovers,we all may have heard or read about the Austin High Gang of Chicago during the 20s but relatively little about the Barrett Junior High Gang of South Philadelphia of the 40s.
The Wise One is a member of that 40s gang and who in my humble opinion is a superior musician and who like Bob Wilber is a quiet and potent giant .
Prior to WM stellar performance at the 1984 Grammy Awards, not many people in these United States knew that the Wise One routinely played classical pieces with symphony orchestras, and who could easily adjust to a more jazz oriented trumpet sound and perform jazz compositions.

Intellectually,I cannot say if the SCHUYLKILL water is responsible for the rich musical talent that came from South Philadelphia, emotionally,I know it's either the water, the cheesesteak,or the soft pretzels,or a combination of the three.
The latter was confirmed during the mid 60s by Lee Morgan & Bobby "Moanin' " Timmons.
With that said, perhaps the Wise One can share his times during the 70s at the Village Vanguard with Thad & Mel or his Mexico City tour with a young WM .

Jazz is like air - not important until you're not getting enough !

After the Dodgers left Brooklyn and we switched alliances to the METS,guys like Manny would be banned from riding the #7 train from Times Square to Flushing.

You have been away a long time,KJ LaGuardia ls right by Lincoln Center, not far from Monk's home. Manny cool, I think we worked together when Manny was a teen-aged virtuoso. There were some very seriously gifted guys in Manny's class. Manny is our urbane urbanite in the mid-west. Check out Manny styling in the Monette montage.Mi amigo is right out of G.Q........the other guys need to consult Mannie for instructions on appearance. Mannie was, in the words of Babs Gonzalez, expoobident!

How's this:

I love baseball and I love New York teams.

I'm also loving a 17 and 8 record so far! 13 and 11? Okay, but that needs to seriously improve and soon.

Long Island?! What the...? Queens?

Grew up in East Harlem and went to M&A when it was in Harlem on Convent Ave. and currently residing outside Minneapolis. But hey, at least you were close

Enjoy,

Thanks O Wise One.
After watching Lee's solo performance on "Night in Tunisia" with a young violet (Wayne Shorter [NYU]) in the back ground,it brought tears to my eyes and memories of a remark made by Nat Hentoff who attended a Dizzy gig and who heard an unbelieving trumpet solo while the band was warming up on the bandstand only to discover he was talking to Dizzy while hearing the trumpet.
As he turned around,he saw a a cat from Mastbaum Tech who while in his teens was a big hit among the folks who showed up at Music City,
Philadelphia,Pa
BTW,I didn't see Bobby Timmons in that clip or a pianist for that matter, and the bassist was Jymie Merritt of Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh own Art Blakey who I may say looked damn spiffy in his bow-tie.
At a later date,I'll shake things up by discussing Mr.Blakey's Pennsylvania Messengers as opposed to his out-of- towners Messengers.

wasn't Buddy DeFranco.
I trust you too will share with us the great heights the Share with your fellow boardees solo prior gig a
