Welcome, Bluej. I have a Paris Selmer Radial from '68. The B700 is a bit newer, but still from an excellent period for Selmer horns and should serve you very well. Enjoy!

Nice to get a reply. Actually I had lessons for 3 years before I put my horn up. I put in the 'locked' storeage closet in the band room for a while. I had just gotten braces and absolutely couldn't play for nearly a month. Once the pain began to lessen, and I went back to band and my trumpet was missing.
About that time I was getting into my JAZZ period and took up the Bass. So I never did replace that trumpet. To this day I regret that.
Ray Brown was God back then, and I played bass in an R & B band in college. I also play guitar. After getting serious about guitar I transferred colleges to study with a good jazz guitar teacher. I became a music major for a year waiting for that teacher to return from a 'summer tour'. That tour extended the rest of the year; and, in fact, he never did return...and time rolls on. In the meantime I've picked up a Tenor sax as well...
But, right now, my main goal was to get another trumpet before the urgency passed. I want to play 'St. James Infirmary' on the trumpet, just like I heard in New Orleans last month.
Anyway, when noone responded to my question regarding the Selmer B700 in large bore, which I was looking to buy, I went ahead and picked up the 'Old Standard', Bach 37, instead. I also got a Schilke 14A4A mouthpiece. I really wanted something a little different (ie, less common); but, lets face it, the Bach is a great horn. Versatile, and parts are very available should the need arise. I can see a Schikle B1 in my future, though. Now that I have the Bach, I'm going to have to play the Schikle before buying. Stomvi also has my attention, but It seems like more of a 'Classical' horn. I'll be into old R&B and Blues first. (I play Blues guitar). Then, once I build some improvisational skills, I'll try a little jazz. I'll be looking for a copy of the 'REAL' fake book; you know, the one in the keys in which the pieces were originally written. Capital Idea!

OK, I know I can play R&B on the Bach; but...NEW QUESTION:
WHAT HORNS DO WE LIKE FOR JAZZ???

p.s. Stu, Try transposing your improvisations into a variety of alternate keys. If you're playing jazz, pick 3 or 4 'Jazz' keys you don't often use. That will make your improv ability usable in a group, should the opportunity arise.

Hey,
Thanks for the welcome. I must confess, I haven't got the hang of this yet. I started this post in the wrong place, and I've already responded to the wrong person. Sorry veery715 and Stu. My navigation on the forum is like my improvization...I never quite know where I'm going to wind up. I thought more music theory would help, and I still believe it did, some; but I think I need to play a greater variety of marerial and practice, practice, practice. Maybe I'll be more committed this time around.
I've been reading the forum for a while now, and I really like it...very friendly place.
I'm having trouble starting a new post though. I can reply, but when I 'click' in the box of a new post my cursor won't start, and I can't type anything. I must be doing something wrong; but, for the life of me, I don't know what. Maybe someone can help. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the conversation. I've learned quite a bit these last couple of days, just reading a variety of posts. Collectively, there's a wealth of knowledge here. Whoever started this forum, my complements! I'm really enjoying it.
