New to forum - returning to trumpet, sort of

Hello group,

I'm here to learn and I have a long way to go. I'm 55, live in a suburb of Rochester, NY, and just rented a trumpet yesterday. I play keyboard/piano/organ and accordion, a little guitar, and a little mando. Picked up the keyboards again at 50, after playing from 7 to 25. Then began to dabble in the rest.

I played trumpet and french horn in band during junior and senior high school. I recently decided that I need to play with other folks in a band setting - to motivate me to practice. I am fortunate enough to be in Rochester with the Eastman School of Music New Horizon's (mature amateur) bands and orchestra. I plan on starting the band in September, but need to get up to speed over the summer.

I was able to make a sound that sort of sounded like a trumpet last night - so I will figure out the forum to find some next steps. I don't remember very much about the trumpet, but look forward to learning!

There are a lot of people here that make sounds that sound like a trumpet.

I played a little guitar once too....it was about 4 inches long.

Good thing you started back up with trumpet in the warm weather in Rochester......wait til winter - warmup exercises have a whole new meaning (like get the mouthpiece warm enough to put on your lips and getting the valves moving again!!!!).

I had the opportunity to do some work in Rochester. Got to see what the lake effect is all about one January.......

But gotta tell you - I do miss Wegman's!!! Not a one in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area!!! I got hooked on them in New Jersey!

As to your comeback trail on trumpet - since you played in jr/sr. high school - you probably still have your Arban's or other book for exercises - start easy - read what he's got to say. I also like the Allen Vizzuti method books (I like his warmup exercises).

Hey RGood! Of course you miss Wegmans - why would any of us still live here after a winter, if it wasn't for Wegmans?! I'll have plenty of time to practice during the lake effect events, though. Although it hasn't been all that bad the last couple of years (relatively speaking, of course - anything under 1-1/2 feet is no big deal)
