How I could've forgotten Thad, Faddis, Maxwell, and Sweets on the first round is beyond me!
Big Band as I know the term is 18 piece +
In other words, plenty of BRASS !

Tony nailed my feelings about trumpet sections. My " Chicken or Egg" line referred to the need for music to be on the stand for those players to do what they do best. Big Band is arranger-driven.

Hmmm...I always enjoyed playing second myself. But I never got past playing in Lynn Oliver's band in NYC. We used to do gigs in restaurants and such. A lot of ggreat players worked with him, and many of the great bands of the fifties and sixties used his studio for rehearsals, which is how he got a lot of his charts.
But I digress.....
All time section: Snooky, Clark, Ernie Royal, Don Fagerquist, Faddis

Current NYC Section: Tony K, Scott Wendholt, Jimmy Owens, Greg Gisbert

Or......Marvin Stamm, Lew Soloff, Laurie Frink, Randy Brecker

Or......Tony Garruso, Todd Schwartz, Justin Mullins, Ron Horton

or.....Well, you get the idea.

Any chance you know Dave Brown? He's out in your part of N.J., does quite a bit on Broadway. We go back about 100 years or so..

I know Dave, although not too well, we have spoken a number of times. He is a grand fellow. I also know Bart Bartholemew, who was a friend of Dave's from U of Nebraska, I believe. Dave is a mega busy player, but I think he just retired from teaching and is cutting back a bit on his schedule in general.
The first time I met him, we were both doing the Teaneck First night show. He had a Dixie band, I was with a Klezmer band.
Teaneck over the years has had some great players live here. But the worst is when I went from being the best player on my block to the worst. Faddis moved in down the street.
Ack...

I understood the gist of your remarks but there are times when a Jazz band takes off with little to work with or without any rehearsal ...case in point
Eddie Harris,Les McCann,Benny Bailey,Leroy Vinnegar,Donald Dean
combustive explosion on "Swiss Movement" .

Count Basie said it best when he said:
It's the way you play that makes it . Play like you play. Play like you think, and then you got it, if you're going to get it. And whatever you get, that's you, so that's your story.

Head arrangements for big band are rare these days. Some of the Joe Williams vocals with Basie sound made-up at the gig. Earl Warren and Marshall Royal were masters of setting up a riff. Maestro Ellington often worked out arrangements on the fly. I loved that band
