Dave - I'm not too familiar (I know, I should be) with Willie Thomas. I'll have to do some research.

Willie was a fine bebop player and an early pre-Aebersold Jazz Educator. He'd played with Woody in the late 40's, N.Y. in the early 50's. He wrote several approaches to Jazz Improv based on pentatonics and traveled the country playing at various schools and teaching improv. His works still stand up today, and his playing certainly would!

Bart, Dave, Laurie Frink, Don Gorder (teaches at Berklee), myself, Steve Erickson (Prin. Trp. Omaha Sym. for the last hundred years or so!) were all at Nebraska the same time. Practice rooms were hard to come by!

Where and which golf course had this meeting take place ?
Up until a year ago,Marvin was a bi-annual guest at the Manchester
Craftsmen's Guild here in Pittsburgh,Pa.
Regardless of season,the man is always well tanned and appear to be living the good life.
His Quartet included Bill Mays,Ed Soph,and I think Rufus Reed was the bassist.

Marvin is one cool cat and a class act. My dad and Marvin used to gig in Memphis(where Marvin hails from) back in the early 60s when my dad was doing his undergrad work at Memphis State. My dad speaks very fondly of that time and when Marvin comes to town it's pretty cool to listen to them talk and catch up. Even though they've taken very divergent paths on their musical careers, he's always treated my dad with class and respect.
Recently, I had the fortune of having a lesson with him It was an eye opening lesson in which Marvin basically found major fundamental flaws in my playing and he was very honest but fair with me and gave me some tips to help me as well as he helped get me in touch with someone here in Dallas to take lessons with. On top of that he didn't even charge me, which I was very grateful for but I felt kind of bad because he really did help me out a lot. Anyway, sorry for hijacking this thread but I had to chime in.
