How to succeed in Business

Hey guys,

Trumpet playing buddy of mine just passed a call on to me to play in "How to succeed in business without really trying", haven't played in a musical for ages and I've never heard of it! Anyone here played it? What's it like? Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's a Frank Loesser show from the sixties. It starred Robert Morse. The big tune is "I Believe in You." Red Ginzler wrote the charts in the original production, he could be a very busy arranger.

I jumped in because Tony is much too young to know much about the original production of the show. The original cast album is still available. It's darn good.
There was a more recent production of the show that starred Matthew Broderick. This show has up-dated arrangements. Byron Stripling was the lead player on that one. This one bears looking at

Yes, I agree with Wilmer ... I would pick up any cast recordings that you can get your hands on. More than likely, you'll be playing the newer version, but having both will give you a better idea of what to expect.

Just got a recording of the newer version and had a quick flick through - Byron sounds great, very strong. Sounds like it should be a fun show so i'm looking forward to it.

Not that I'm adding anything to this thread...ha..but I played this show with Ralph Maccio (sp?) in the lead role... Well, let's just put it this way... the opening scene is the star (Maccio)...sitting on a kind of swing (actually, it's more like one of those things that window washers stand on, high up the side of a building)... Maccio sings that number...and that was the last we saw of him the rest of the night. The rest of that week of the show, for that matter. He was actually very sick and thought he could hang in there..but, nope. Imagine the audience's confusion...wondering where the heck is Ralph! He's the Karate Kid, for cryin' out loud!! ha. We all felt pretty bad for the guy...and being the only "star draw" for the show, it became kind of lackluster. I think it's still a funny show.. and certainly remember the movie (yes..Wilmer!! Robert Morse!!! )

Eh...nothing but yacking about a memory... Anyway..hope you enjoy the show!!

I played the small ensemble ("modified orchestration") version of it - practice your quick mute changes as there is are a ton of them. The show itself was fun but I wasn't thrilled with the particular orchestration I played.
